they said on Gardeners Question Time the other week that Basil likes heat and sun but not direct sunlight,so a south windowsill but behind a net curtain sort of thing. Also to water it with tepid water in the morning only as it doesnt like its "feet wet at night"!

Cheers Kimmee.....I don't think they split until they are dried. I was watching river cottage and they only split when they dry.....?
I peeled one of my garlic bulbs to use this evening, it had split, but they were partially dry already. I read in one of the gardening magazines that you can loosen the soil round them several days before harvesting to start the process. I think the tip was actually for onions but I applied it to my garlic (mainly so I could see what was going on under there).
I made the most lovely garlic bread tonight, homemade dough, garlic butter with the 'wet' garlic I harvested and purple basil leaves from the free seeds I got In one of my magazines. We then had freshly picked strawberies with cream for desert.
The best part of it is that my OH has got really into it now he can see results. I think he had thought of it as an odd little hobby for the past 6 months, now he comes home from work asking what he can do to help in the garden, and what can we pick next.
Im sure I read a post about home-made mint ice-cream but I cant remember who posted. I'm feeding with doff organic feed (which doesn't list the ingredients, just says it's for all plants) then when my wormery gets going I plan to use my worm wee!
Don't know if the doff is high nitrogen or not - is that what I need?
On a positive note, I had my first new potatos for tea today after a spot of firkling.Glad to hear your potatoes have been successful :T

it was delicious even if I do say so myself
Ok... here is how I do it....
50g fresh mint leaves and stalks
300ml double cream
250ml whole milk
100g sugar (I use granulated)
teensy drop of green food colouring (optional)
Bung it all in a saucepan and heat gently until the cream starts to boil slightly and the sugar dissolves.
Leave to cool and once cool strain out the mint leaves
put into an ice cream maker and churn until made or put into a tupperware box and mash up every 2 hours to remove the ice crystals
Enjoy!
I usually have this with some chocolate sauce, but you could put choccy chips in the mix to make mint choc chip ice cream.

its very good for a mint glut as I only use mint for tea......

I'm sure the extra strong mints would be lovely, but don't know how my fillings would take it
I will definitely give this recipe a go so many thanks.
We had a "spinach, bolted onion & out-of-date 10p pack of cheddar" tart for tea, made with our own eggs too, so that really was money-saving0 -

thanks for the advise re peppers! bit more confident now.
Soo cant wait to start eating some of my goodies! blueberries should start ripening soon, and hopefully my courgettes wont be too long either - got lots of flowers already. lots of small yellow/white flowers on my french beans too. Lots of warm sunny weather here in South Wales, so everything is growing like mad! Just hope it lasts a little longer!
PS - want to start growing mint now so i can make my own ice cream! yum.0
