  • Glam - cut in half is right - it is the skin that can cause a seal - Krystal knows someone whose son choked to death on a whole grape.

AF - I will say what I do but I by no means have this sussed, it is just working for us ATM. Benjamin used to kick off the minute I headed for the door too.

I give him his bottle in my bed - he lays on my pillow for it and I cuddle in next to him singing sappy songs ;)

Then we have a cuddle and I pick him up in a bedtime way (the kind of way that he will only let me hold him when he is shattered!) and carry him through to his room singing TT and kissing his face. I take him in, lay him down, say night night, keeping singing, then leave backwards...still facing him and blowing kisses. I close the door most of the way so he can't see me and keep singing, then I close the door slowly (he could be crying at this point, I sing louder!!)

If I think he has stood up I go back in and kiss him and say goodnight again and leave again.

First few nights took a while, it got better and better after that. If he cries I just keep singing louder and repeat the whole leaving process - he is usually shattered so it is just a matter of getting me out of the room and him laying down and relaxed.

Hi AF - Wow 6 hours is good! The only way I get that is if he comes in with us. Last night I went to bed at 12.20am and he was awake at 1am then slept til 6,30am but I get crap sleep cos he's like a starfish!

i know, i got the shock of my life when i woke to see her standing at the end of her cot and had to blink a good few times at the clock as i thought i was going made.

that was after a few nights of being awake every 1.5 hours.

4 hours is our most consistent length of time. like you say, when it is in with you, you sleep terribly.

oh i would pay anything for a magic wand

At the moment I put Caitlyn down in the cot and lie on the bed with my back to her until she's settled... She knows I'm there but there's no interaction... I have no idea how I'm going to get her sleeping in Aimee's room without disturbing Aimee too much though...

AF, I leave Caitlyn to lie herself back down unless she's really distraught... She often stands up and has a whinge but when she realises I'm not taking any notice she lies back down... Often the wrong end of the cot, but I just move her later when we go to bed... Tonight she went lying sideways on her knees with her bum wedged up one set of bars and her head up the others!

    Thank you Mfd :)

Hmmm I can foresee running into a bit of a dilemma...

Going to the USA in July for my sister's wedding. Future BIL has a 6 yo son who he has custody of but gets lots of help raising from his mom, etc., so they are very used to the idea of babysitters and just being able to drop him off whenever it suits. Sis has made loads of mentions about various activities she wants to get up to while we're there, clearly thinking that we can just leave Finn with the mom or another similar babysitter...

Now I don't have a problem with babysitters (I mean, trust-wise), I just don't think he can be left for any length of time (and especially not at night)...but am I being silly? I feel like I don't have a problem leaving him but I'm worried he'll freak out and make hell for whoever's looking after him. Or is this normal to think that?? :o:o

eta: because we've never left him before...or rather, the 1 time I did for 3 hrs it went very badly for all involved. :(
Since he'll only be six/seven months at the time I don't think it would be unreasonable to not want to leave him with people who even if you know them would be strangers to him and in a strange (to him) place. If you do want to be able to leave him, you would need to gradually build up to it.
Glam, why does it matter what OH thinks when its you that does the night time routine ??
If the other parent is being totally unreasonable and not having to deal with the consequences then that is a fair point but in general a parent shouldn't lose the right to have a say in things just because they aren't the one doing them.

The thing with OH is he can't bear to hear him cry - but then neither can I.

Right, I'm off to bed. Had to put the lullabies on to drown out the sound of IL's going to bed! God they are noisy, OH went up to tell them to !!!!!!!
