I thought I would join in.

Two weeks ago we planed some tomatoes, radish, cucumber, leeks, parsnips, chillies, kale, basil, parsley and lettuces.

Nothing has come up yet bar three radish seedlings (which I now realise we should have sown direct!) and one tomato.

I'm sort of worried in case we have done something wrong as I would have expected a bit more to have popped up by now...

I planted some broad beans last Thursday and more leeks, too. And courgettes and squash at the start of this week. The 'waiting for germination' part is the most nerve-wracking!

    Where/how did you plant them?

Parnsip, chillies, parsley take a LONG time to germinate (up to 3 weeks, some people do wait longer).

Your lettuces should be up by now (unless it was a heated propagator and therefore it was too hot for them_/

Broad beans will take up to 10 days to germinate, the courgettes and squash need to be kept warm until ready for planting out.

    Hi

Im sure i posted this question yesterday buts it gone missing so we will try again!

Im a newbie, got lots of stuff in pots in my conservatory germinating, cress seems particularly fast which is fun!

I had some potato's which had got the long white sprouts which i planted but now im thinking they were the wrong type of sprouts, should i take them out and start again? or leave and see what happens?!

    xx

are you planting eating potatoes which have sprouted?

I don't normally plant anything bar seed potatoes as I know then they will have been selected for growing and haven't got anything sprayed on them (eating potatoes will have been sprayed to prevent them from growing). The white sprouts are fine (it just means they were kept in the dark instead of light). you can scrub them off and they will still grow.

No idea which part of the country you're in but if there's any sign of frost you must cover up any leaves that show with soil. :)

    Hi everyone

All my seedlings doing well :D

Can anyone tell me when you can harvest garlic please? I sowed mine in pots last November, thought they weren't going to do anything then a week or so ago they had all shot up. I know I won't be able to harvest them for quite a while, but when do you 'know' they're ready??

Good to see everyone's successes :D

:D someone remembered to sow them, mine are going to be pants this year

Any idea what type of garlic you planted? Hardneck garlic will send up flower shoots (very tasty, soft taste). Garlic is ready when the leaves start dying back (like potatoes).

I *think* it's August but don't quote me. The ones we put in have shot up too this last week. I will dig my book out (my OH keeps taking it to the toilet with him :rotfl:I can't grumble - poo time is the ONLY time he reads!!) and see if I am right.

Mine started with the white sprouters but I left them 2 more weeks and they went to the dark purpley ones that look like all the pictures in my book. I planted them out in containers yesterday before they went all soft.

Thanks for responses guys. Decided on the corrugated plastic and it worked a treat! £6 and job done. Hopefully if the weather holds off i plan on doing all my planting at the weekend. Not bothering with potting up just going to plant some seeds inside and out and and see what happens.

Got in the car last night at about 11pm and temperature said 16 degrees!! Hopefully we don't get too much of a cold snap but think it should be ok form here on. I'll update as to what i sow sometime next week.

Update on current stock, fruit trees have all started to sprout their first shoots, blackcurrant bush and quince are all well along. Should get some blossom on the quince before long. I left it this year as i'd cut it right back last year which will hopefully yield more fruit this year, same for the blackcurrant. Strawberries like others were left all winter and were under snow for 3 weeks. All absolutely fine though and just starting to show signs of the new growth.

Just looked at the weather and it doesn't bode well we shall see. Happy growing.

Hi, thanks for the reply. We planted them in little pots/seed trays in propagators on windowsill. Last week I moved some of them to a windowsill with a radiator underneath, but still nothing has happened. Half the seeds are on a windowsill above a radiator and half are on a windowsill without. Most are in propagators but the basil and lettuce are not because we didn't have enough propagator lids, so they are just in trays.

I wonder if I should plant some more. I am also not sure how much I should water them? Those in the propagators feel fairly moist, I guess because of the condensation, even though we have not watered them much. Those not in propagators feel quite dry. These ones are in coir, and the others in general compost. We have used general compost before with quite good results but I am worried about nothing popping up!

I am not sure how often to water them either.

Hi all, quick question, I have some peas growing but only 50% of the ones i sowed have germinted. I saw once on TV that you can soak the peas in water to speed up germination, how long do they need to be soaked for?? Until they look like they are germinating? Any help would be great, thanks.

I read to soak them for an hour, so I did; just threw a handful in a bucket with a couple of inches of water in - did about 45 mins worth of jobs elsewhere then pulled them out and potted them

Oh my Gosh, I am such a freak...i just looked through the kitchen window and saw a bird pulling a huge worm out of the grass, so i shooed the bird away and went and got the worm and chucked it on my compost. I think the dosage of my medication needs increasing!
