  • Hi all, I was looking for some advice and thought I would hope on the board / thread and seek out you experts. It's my dad's birthday in a couple of weeks and I was looking to get him started on growing his own veg as it's something he would like to do. He has a decent sized back garden, garden shed, no greenhouse, all grass, but it's not great ground / soil id say and too much work to try cultivate it, so I was looking to get him some sort of starter growing kit he could potter about with to start with.
Would something like this be a good idea do you think

    http://www.guardianoffers.co.uk/mall/productpage.cfm/GuardianOffers/_EASWGP310/-/Timber-Raised-Bed-%26amp%3B-FREE-Seeds-Starter-Kit

I really don't know the first thing about growing, would I need to get a certain soil, compost etc? He uses the net a lot so would be able to get plenty of starting advice. Any advice welcome, cheers

:jI had a phone call from 'The Greenhouse people' earlier today, to say that my new green house is going to be delivered on the 2nd April thats good friday, so we have all easter weekend to put it up (if the weather is good). I ordered it last week and estimated delivery was 4-6 weeks......i'm so excited. At last i will have somewhere to put all my new veg seedlings, as they are taking over the house, tomatoes and peppers need potting on, and i really need to sow some more peas and carrots, potatoes need planting too.

Today i decided to sow my petunia and busy lizzie seeds, well i can't just have veggies in the garden, we need some pretty flowers to look at too:rotfl:oh and i bought 4 fushia plugs yesterday and repotted them too.

Morning all - I'm wanting to grow some salad veg in large pots and growbags outside - I've planted tom seeds, lettuce seeds in individual pots to bring on indoors.

I have about 100 mile round trip to the shops, so not going in until next week to get larger pots for spring onions, radishes. Am I right in thinking these will need to be sown directly into the pots they will be in permanently, rather than bringing on indoors then transplanting
  • SInce its been raingin all day yesterday my tomatoes and lettuce have grown like no tomorrow!!! Crossing fingers for some sun today though!

I'm not starting anything off yet, all I have outside is crocus and snowdrops. Local starting time is mid April, so I'm covering my ears and singing until then. Lalalalala :)

I tried one of the leek seedlings yesterday OMG they are so oniony! I wonder why they are so strong? I know I will have to wait for them but it's nice to see them growing away! They cost so much in the shops
