This time mine have chitted too soon! They are long and purple and the seed spuds are going wrinkly - but i'm gonna bung em in and see what happens!
I think a big part of the fun is not knowing....then when you burrow around it's like a free go on a tombola! :rotfl:
Waaah! That's fab, that's exactly what it should be like!!!0 -
I just saw a cat pooing in my brand new raised bed. Cheeky beggar must think its a giant litter tray. Am sick of next doors cats coming and pooing in my garden.
Anything safe for the children that cats don't like that I can put down? Am I right in thinking citrus peel or have I dreamt it?
I had the same problem! I have sprayed the areas where they get in, and around the raised bed with cat repellant. I have also filled plastic bottles with water, and put a large mirror behind part of the bed. I have even put about 150 flourescent straws sticking up in the bed so they can't get a good squat going without getting a straw up their butt! :rotfl:
Touch wood.......they haven't been back yet!
But.... if they do i am putting nails across the top of the fences, as they can't get in any other way - i've cat proofed the rest with planks of wood!2009 - Attempting to grow my own Kitchen garden.....did it!!!

Can anyone give me some advice please?! After getting a code on here for Suttons, I am anticipating the arrival of these seeds;
Carrots
Broccoli
Sweetcorn
Runner beans
Cherry toms
Cucumber
Pepper
Baby spinach
Rocket
Watercress
But after reading thru this thread my head is full of propergators, fleece tunnels, poly-tunnels, greenhouses, windowsills and I dont know what to do for each of them - it seems like a mind field?
I have a 4 tier 'greenhouse' (tube frame covered in plastic type thing), flimsy plastice seed trays (ones with about 20 sections) and some compost.... now what do I do?!?
HELP please!:o
Don't panic - honestly. The seeds will come with easy to understand instructions on the back, telling you when to sow and where. (if they don't a quick google will give you all the info). Decide if you are starting them off in or outside. Inside ones pop them in your seed trays with compost, put on a windowsill and water when compost feels dry. Outside ones go straight where you want to grow them. Don't sow sweetcorn yet, it's a bit early. HTH.2009 - Attempting to grow my own Kitchen garden.....did it!!!

2 questions for anyone...
1. Is it ok to use seeds taken from the fruits purchased in the supermarket... i.e. buy some tomatoes I like in Tesco, take some seeds out and plant them?
I had a particularly tasty baby plum tomato from the greengrocers last year & just squeezed the seeds on to kitchen paper and dried them out.
Planted them a few weeks ago & have got 100% germination so I`m looking forward to seeing what grows as I know they may not come true.
Did the same thing with a cucumber grown in my garden & had 0% germination but it was worth a try.
This youtube link explains it (if you can understand the american accent)

someone remembered to sow them, mine are going to be pants this year
Any idea what type of garlic you planted? Hardneck garlic will send up flower shoots (very tasty, soft taste). Garlic is ready when the leaves start dying back (like potatoes).
Thanks Misskool, I honestly can't remember what variety they were, I think they were hardneck and they weren't just cloves that I got from supermarket garlic. Thanks also Shelvis, I guess if the leaves start dying back in August I will dig 'em up lol.0 -
Well, I've made my first leap into veg growing. Planted my strawberry plants in hanging baskets last year... garlic a few weeks back, and some seeds last weekend.. tumbling toms, salad leaves, radish, chives and spring onion, and a load more here just waiting to be sown.
Oh, and I have a raspberry cane, gooseberry bush and japanese wineberry...
I have a titchy tiny garden and need everything to be away from dogs so lots of pots, hanging baskets, wall planters...
I'm silly excited about seeing things growing and can't wait to grow from seed... so hello everyone!!!!!!!!!!!! Looking forward to a productive year (fingers crossed) x0 -
