I just saw a cat pooing in my brand new raised bed. Cheeky beggar must think its a giant litter tray. Am sick of next doors cats coming and pooing in my garden.
Anything safe for the children that cats don't like that I can put down? Am I right in thinking citrus peel or have I dreamt it?0 -
beckstrous wrote: »Hi, thanks for the reply. We planted them in little pots/seed trays in propagators on windowsill. Last week I moved some of them to a windowsill with a radiator underneath, but still nothing has happened. Half the seeds are on a windowsill above a radiator and half are on a windowsill without. Most are in propagators but the basil and lettuce are not because we didn't have enough propagator lids, so they are just in trays.
I wonder if I should plant some more. I am also not sure how much I should water them? Those in the propagators feel fairly moist, I guess because of the condensation, even though we have not watered them much. Those not in propagators feel quite dry. These ones are in coir, and the others in general compost. We have used general compost before with quite good results but I am worried about nothing popping up!
I am not sure how often to water them either.
Depending on where you are in the country, it is still REALLY cold, especially by a windowsill at night. Although, it is strange they haven't germinated yet. How deep did you plant the seeds? Did you follow the depth written on the packets? Probably best to re-sow some more now.
I've not used coir before so cannot comment but I don't water my plants every day (unless it's HOT). If you're using a propagator lid, I don't water again until they pop up. If not using a propagator lid, I just crumble a bit between my fingers and if they are still damp, they will be fine for another day.Hi all, quick question, I have some peas growing but only 50% of the ones i sowed have germinted. I saw once on TV that you can soak the peas in water to speed up germination, how long do they need to be soaked for?? Until they look like they are germinating? Any help would be great, thanks.
I soak mine in lukewarm water overnight to give them a nice start. You can also try to germinate them on wet kitchen roll. Basically, line a small takeaway plastic tub then dampen the kitchen roll. Put peas on, cover with clingfilm and leave for a few days. Pot on the ones that you can see the root forming.0 -
Citrus peel is good or fill a large coke bottle with water and place it face down in the bed. The cat's can't see the difference and think it's another animal.Feb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790

Big ask here although hopefully someone can assist me
Does anyone possibly have any Black Forest courgette seeds or any other variety of climbing courgette? None of the cheaper seed shops seem to have them.
Also is there any other veg that is climbing and produces big yields like the courgettes mentioned above?
Thanks0 -
Hi,
Can anyone give me some advice please?! After getting a code on here for Suttons, I am anticipating the arrival of these seeds;
Carrots
Broccoli
Sweetcorn
Runner beans
Cherry toms
Cucumber
Pepper
Baby spinach
Rocket
Watercress
But after reading thru this thread my head is full of propergators, fleece tunnels, poly-tunnels, greenhouses, windowsills and I dont know what to do for each of them - it seems like a mind field?
I have a 4 tier 'greenhouse' (tube frame covered in plastic type thing), flimsy plastice seed trays (ones with about 20 sections) and some compost.... now what do I do?!?
HELP please!:o0 -

Morph, Im doing a few climbers:
Globe courgette
Golden delicious squash
Beans galore
Patty pan, apparently clamber like mad and crop more than you can ever eat ( part of the courgette family)
All these grow well in containers and clamber/climb:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

What space have you got to grow them?
when the seeds arrive, you can fill your seed trays (the one with 20 sections) with some compost and following the instructions on the packet sow the seeds to the correct depth.
fill the seed tray, tap the compost down and then sow your broccoli, tomatoes, peppers.
Carrots and rocket can go straight into the ground/pot they are meant to be growing in (read seed packet for instructions on spacing and depth). If you are now frost free, you can sow the baby spinach too.
Later, start sowing the runner beans, sweetcorn, cucumber before planting them out. They want to be started later as they are sensitive to the cold and don't like being pot bound.0 -
YAY my Dig In Seeds arrived
Now all I need is to see what the weather is going to be like at the weekend to get some more stuff planted.
I have had a little problem with my cat eating my sweetcorn so I have had to improvise and make covers for them!! My Cucumber seeds seem to be failing and falling over which is not good. I hope re-potting on will save them
You all seem to be doing so well with everything :TRestarting C25K in 2014 - Week 8 - 1/3 completed

Hi
Im sure i posted this question yesterday buts it gone missing so we will try again!
Im a newbie, got lots of stuff in pots in my conservatory germinating, cress seems particularly fast which is fun!
I had some potato's which had got the long white sprouts which i planted but now im thinking they were the wrong type of sprouts, should i take them out and start again? or leave and see what happens?!
xx
I'm sure I answered this last time?!?Leave them, mine were white and spindly last year and I still got a reasonable harvest - not bumper i'll admit,- but ok for my first time trying!
This time mine have chitted too soon! They are long and purple and the seed spuds are going wrinkly - but i'm gonna bung em in and see what happens!I think a big part of the fun is not knowing....then when you burrow around it's like a free go on a tombola! :rotfl:
