Because our gate is locked, so he has to climb over it to get upto the house.

BTW he doesn't scale a high security gate, it's just a normal driveway gate.

and if he/she falls doing this he will be told its not delivery spec and he did it to him/herself
why not fit a post box to the gate
why do you think its acceptable for someone to be expected to climb a fence/gate to deliver your mail?
do all visitors have to do this?kinda defeats the point of having a gate

I think it's a case of all hands on deck rather than the management trying to score points over the union.

Our cottage is on a private estate (which we rent). The reason we have to have the gate locked is to stop people using the road through the estate as a shortcut. Joe Public apparently think that even though it says private at both entrances to the estate, that they can walk their dogs, drive their vehicles and park their vehicles and go for walks, meaning that the residents can't get out and of course their animals leave lovely pressies.

And if you had read my whole post you would have seen that there is an open entrance to the estate, which deliveries etc can use. If we know something is being delivered and we are at home then we leave the gate open at our end. So the delivery van can drive straight to our house.

As we live in a semi rural location, our postie comes by van. I guess rural posties are more understanding that delivering post in rural locations, is not just a case of walking up the garden path to the front door.

you seem to assume i have no experience of rural deliveries
    you would be wrong
vans are not exclusive to the country either, dont know if its news to you
no my point was that posties shouldnt have to(or do at all ) climb over obstacles to make a delivery
the rurals havent been hit as hard as town duties so have more leeway in times
    this will change
yes im just not 'understanding' what with 'just' waliking up a garden path

I wasn't assuming anything, just pointing out what happens in our area. Although I do have to disagree with you about rurals not being hit as hard as towns. This part of Northumberland was hit pretty badly last week. We had no bin collection or any post from last Monday until yesterday.

And I will say again, that the people that come on to our estate to deliver to our home, don't have to climb over the gate. They can use the main entrance which is always open.

I'm sorry I posted anything now! My original post was merely pointing out how helpful our local royal mail we're, when I spoke to them about expected deliveries. And now it turns out I'm justifying where I live!!!!

where did I mention weather? i am referring to RM's culling of staff and duties
i expect a lot of rural customers will get a wake up call as many seem to think (and this is from experience) that its a god given right that postal staff should have to go through a decathlon to get to their door

heres a little eye opener for you
in my office we have gone through all of RM's changes
my own duty and many more are too long.management wont admit it but the times required speak for themselves

so i go in at my start time(Saturday is an earlier start and only a 7.5 hour day)
make it known to the manager that i need to be on the street @X time to allow me to complete my duty
told it will be fine, also reminded i must take my 20 minute break before going out or i lose the right to take it
so by the time the mail is up i am up and ready as one of the first in the office
i then go and get my special deliveries, tracked and redleliveries.
i then go for my 20 minute break
go and see the manager as to what i am meant to do (it is now 10 minutes past the time i said i needed to be on the street and its a 20 minute drive there)
so rather than getting out 'early' and delivering everything i am instructed ot pull out all letters except 1st class, stamped and dated
all the mail i spent the morning putting up is now dumped in 5 trays
theres modernisation in action.nothing to do with weather but this is what you are up against
following my recommendation would have got everything delivered
now tomorrow i wont have time to deliver that mail plus Mondays mail so yet more will be left
continue this all week and then have the same issues next Saturday

    so its Wednesday,lets update

Monday i came in and put all the streamed mail from Saturday in
then streamed Mondays mail(as instructed i would have to do on Saturday)
then got questioned by the same manager as to why i was streaming  as usual got told I was being awkward
didnt have to wait on the last missort run and got around my duty in the allowed time but didnt do any larger 'drivers' packets

Tuesday,a quieter day usually as RM cut down on the mail centre staff
    so less mail sorted
however i was told to put all mail in and got out before the last missort run again.over 4 hours to deliver just the mail
RM agreed H&S is 3.5 hours

Wednesday, putting all them mail in today as im clear from Tuesday.get hauled in the office for an official 'chat' as to why i am not doing D2D's(thats the unaddressed crap you get)
explain (as i have many times) about the time to drive out, drive back, size of the duty etc etc
get told that doesnt matter and to leave whatever mail i have to so i can deliver the D2D items
so go back to my work area and remove all 2nd class, mailsort,DSA amil from the frame
made to wait for the final missorts so by the time i drive out,do my business deliveries, large items and bg drops its 10.10
i have to return to the office at 13.10 so im left with 3 hours to do a 3.5 hour deliver (supposedly) this is the norm
so i make it for 13.10 by pushing on,but now i have mail under my frame for tomorrow yet i will be expected to somehow have time tomorrow along with D2D's and tomorows mail
this is the future folks, this is RM's modernisation
