  • I need to do my washing but after i loaded the machine i realised i ran out of washing powder last week & failed to get around to getting more:eek:. So i quickly put the computer on & came here to see if there was an alternative to bought washing powder. I descovered 'Gloop' so i mixed up a batch of the simple version, (bar of grated soap, microwave, hot water, soda crystals. thanks Math.;))
It has got the clothes clean,Yippeee :T.
BUT everything stinks sweaty! (I'm sure i read that soda crystals can do this) I think i'll have to invest in better conditioner:o or get another bottle of febreze to spray everything with:p.

Will i use 'Gloop' again? ... Of course i will, i've got a big bowl of the stuff to use up now. :rotfl:

  • Thanks! As long as I can find a cheap glycerine soap (I'm allergic to preservatives used in most soaps and detergents, hence the thought about making a natural detergent).

Amber - have you thought about making your own soap - you can do it with Trex, olive oil.... that kind of thing. Trex would make a good one for then converting to gloop

    Old laundry detergent bottles

    Directions

    Step 1
Grate your soap with an old grater, set it aside separately.

    Step 2
Take a large pot that can hold more than 6 cups, and add 6 cups of water, slowly stir in grated soap, heat over medium heat stirring frequently until the soap is melted.

    Step 3
Add the measured borax and washing soda to soap mixture; keep stirring often until the borax and soda have dissolved.

    Step 4
Take a large bucket and add 6 cups of warm water to it, then stir in your hot soap mixture, use whisk to mix well.

    Step 5
Add 1 gallon of cold water to bucket, and then add 10 to 15 drops of your favorite essential oil and stir to mix well.

    Step 6
Stir mixture with a whisk every 30 minutes for about an hour, or until soap mixture is completely cool.

    Step 7
After mixture has cooled, let mixture sit overnight in the bucket, then you can pour the laundry soap into old reusable laundry detergent bottles.

"lavar soda", according to an online translation site.

    Hello everyone!

I made this today and have just used it in my machine. I have to say I'm impressed - the washing has come out not only clean, but feels really soft too

Question though if that's okay? I made it up with 1 mug of borax, 1 mug of soda crystals and a bar of Lush soap that I ADORE the smell of, hoping I'd end up with clothes that smell of Honey I Washed the Kids :rotfl:. The clothes cam out with no smell at all though. Not a whiff. What's the soap in the 'recipie' for? If it's only for scent I'll leave it out next time, but I wondered if the soap helped with the washing at all, so needed to be left in? (In which case I'd just use a super cheap soap next time instead of a nice one?)

Editted to add: I made the powder not gloop if it makes any difference?

    Thank you!
