Is there a difference between 2 and 3? The only places I've had a Visa Electron or Full Auth Visa Debit turned down are places where the terminal isn't connected to the internet so it can't check for authorisation - i.e. on trains. I thought a Full Auth Visa Debit was pretty much the same as a Visa Electron.

You would think they are exactly the same but one thing makes them different and it is the first 6 digits of the card number.

I think it is older systems in general but they look at the card number and if it is in the Electron list, decline it even when they have the capacity to go on-line when a debit card is presented requiring authorisation. So they are turning away business unnessecarily.

There is another card type, althought not so much a type as a format I suppose which can be any card Visa credit, debit, electron, prepaid and they are totally flat. Anything can be programmed on to the stripe and Chip to say go on line or not, even when it is unembossed.

They are becoming popular in the US and Canada. In fact some banks now have premission to print out a new card on the spot. So say you have just opened a new account, or had your card lost or stolen you dont have to wait for it to come through the post they hand it to you there and then. I think that is quite neat, really.

I work for a train company as a conductor, i'll try swiping my new RBS Visa Debit Card through our Avantix (Ticket Machine) later on this afternoon and let you know if it is accepted.

I have a basic Key Account with RBS so prior to Visa Debit it was Solo.

    I'll report back soon.

Will be interesting to see what it does, as I beleive technically it should decline the card. But what is supposed to work in theory and what happens in practice can often be different.

What Type of Card will be issued to Advantage Gold customers (Like Me) who only had a Solo Card ?, will it be the same as issued to Step Account Customers even though it is a 'Full' current account ?.

I will have to wait a few more weeks for the Ulsterbank Switchover , I suspect it will be done at the same time as Natwest, they usually jump at the same time.

Just to confirm the new RBS Visa Debit Card on the RBS Key Account (Previously Solo) will work on-board trains ie conductors ticket machine (Avantix)

If anyone has bought tickets at the ticket office can they confirm if it worked or not?

Are these on or off-line, the on-board machines?

I think those Avantix Pos terminals on trains are Supplied by Casio. They are connected to a Dionne Chip & Pin reader does not seek authorisation. It merely checks that the pin is correct. It will decline cards against a list it holds in its memory which is updated each time the advantix is returned to the base station..

Althought The newer machines have a GSM SIM card slot in the hand device and has the ability to dial out and authorise transactions. I have no idea if these are in use.

If there is an AUTH CODE on the reciept your given then its called the bank for confirmation it is this code that guarentees the merchant payment. And since chip and pin came in, i've never been given a recpeipt without one on it.

My barclaycard used to not dial home when i used it in the local supermarket, and as soon as chip and pin came in it authorised every single transaction.

The Avantix Ticket Machines are off line and seek auth at the end of our shifts.

I do suspect though that the train operating company may impose a ban on the RBS Visa Debit Card on the Key Account as it is meant to have auth taken as soon as the card is used.

We have had problems with passengers using those pre paid cards and then when auth is obtained at the end of the shift it is then found that the passenger had no money in their pre paid account.
