Ok then, each of you New York lovers, recommend me one place each (or more if you can't stick to one) that you have to visit eachtime you go back to NYC. It can be a restuarant, deli or simple hotdog vendor. I want to compile a list of the places to eat for pizza, cheesecake, burgers, etc.

Mine has to be Serendipity 3, not the best food in the world but it is good, it is the ambience and the decor of the place that makes it for me. Quirky and friendly would be how I described it.

You can't compile a list, there are THOUSANDS of places.

What if i recommend a place that has THE best burger in NYC, but you don't like it, or it's out of your price range...

I'm a barfly, i prop up the bar and eat food there, so i still have loads of choices...

I swear by the deli across the road from the Cosmopolitan Hotel though. Morgans it's called. great for a breakfast take it back to the hotel, and then sober up from the previous nights drinking

    That's what I'm after.

Becky, checke dout the Bullpen site and the menu has me salivating already and Morgans seems to crop up a few times in what I've read. Thnaks for those two guys. My preference before looking at the price of food is to hear a first hand account of what the food/place serving it is like. Those two suggestions are now on my list.

    great question

BB kings blues bar & grill 237 west 42nd st
If you want a meal or even brunch with some of the best artists available performing and singing for you try it out.
Food very good but basic portions huge and refills for soft drinks . Tell your kids your going for brekkie in a blues bar and listening to gospel music when you are there they will pull a face but they'll pull a bigger face as you leave.

Simple walk through central park and sit off to soak up NYC. Priceless

Ok.. a bit of housekeeping here..

recently this thread has gone a bit.. erm.. mental... so, as it seems to be peak holiday season for planning holidays to NYC, can I urge people to do the following..

1 - read the FIRST PAGE of this thread. this could actually answer a lot of questions.

2 - direct your question to the right thread. This is the sticky, which is for general questions, transportation around NYC, and banter.. we've had specific threads for quite a while now. So, even though they are on page one of this thread, (and i know this is over 90 pages now), they are here too.. so, hotels goes into hotels, and flights go into flights. (the reason for the split, is i get bored of telling people not to stay in times square, as it is boring, full of lights that flash, lights that don't flash, and tourist trap bars and restaurants.

    Cheap Hotels in New York

    Cheap Flights to New York

3 - Please read through at least the last 5 pages, to see if your question has cropped up.

4 - when asking if this is a good deal, PLEASE, tell us the price for 1 person. This makes it easier to work out when doing DIY. This is mainly because rooms in NYC are PER ROOM, not per person per room. If the room has 2 beds in, it's for up to 4 people.. so the cost gets cheaper the more people stay in it.

Time for some hints and tips.

1 - The centre of New York is Manhattan, in a tourist sense.
2 - You can't have a hotel close to everything, as Manhattan is 2.5 miles wide and 13.5 miles long. If you're near Central Park, you're not near the Staten Island Ferry
3 - New York is safe. it isn't like the movies or CSI:NY. It is the safest big city in the USA, and i think the 3rd Safest in cities over 100,000 people.
4 - The Subway is easy to use and safe, and runs 24 hours a day.
5 - the cheapest way to get from the airport is to walk, However, it is miles away, so public transport is the second cheapest.. ;)
6 - Times Square is a tourist attraction, not the place to be!

I'm sure I can keep going with hints and tips, but that'll do

I think that will help people for now, as in the past few days this has just gone mental, and I apologize if i didn't help or answer queries...

Mark your knowledge and the time you put into this forum is second to none and if it wasnt for you this place would slowly disappear but your opinion of times square is only your opinion you seem to be a lone male traveller having been to new york 11 times soon to be 12 (if i go to london again i dont really want to see big ben again) ( im a liverpool fan so london is our second home)
Telling people to avoid the tourist trap of times square :oesp when they ask for "places to stay" "first time in NYC" "kids" "within easy reach" etc Times square is a important place in Manhattan and Broardway Theatre Land normally throws out around 11pm people want to be where people are and whithin a short spit back or the knowledge and route back to their hotels esp. with family and kids. Be fair and look the bigger picture Times Square /Vegas Strip/Eiffel Tower/Piccadilly Circus all have their place in Tourism . I would be happy to return to Times Square esp. with kids and so would my kids With or without me.
    Thanks

    sorry?

New York is the safest big city in the USA, but there are two others even safer?

Makes sense to me: NYC is the safest BIG city in the US. There are two small cities which are safer.

Actually I'm not sure that the statistics bear it out, but I agree with the general point that NYC (especially Manhattan) is very safe.

    Hello
If you recall i was on here yesterday complaining/mentioning my booking with 1800hotels... that id found the hotel id booked 300.00 cheaper on quikbook.com but 1800hotels refused to refund the difference [i know they didnt have to btw]. this was 1800hotels office based in uk.
When i orgionally emailed i sent email to 1800hotels.com as i booked via .com site and the us version has email back saying they are unable to match the price but would offer full refund.
Thirty Thirty hotel is still available with quikbook.com at a buy now pay later offer.
    What do u all think?

    I don't say don't visit the place, I say don't stay there. That's a huge difference.

My reasons why I'd recommend somewhere other than Times Square to stay when visiting NYC

1 - Why pay more for a hotel that is the same, or a poorer quality than one that is 10 minutes away via the Subway!

2 - Restaurants are few and far between, unless you like McDonalds, or overpriced poorly cooked food. Surely when you've gone around the city for the day, you want to get showered, changed, and maybe grab a quick bite to eat somewhere near where you're staying. With TS, you really can't do that. Believe me, I've stayed just off Times Square twice in my many trips to NYC.

3 - Because of the Subway, or Bus system in New York, everything is within easy reach. You can't be close to everything, because Manhattan is large. So why stay near one attraction that is really just a photo opportunity, and it looks amazing at night and I've been through it, walking or in a taxi virtually every time I've stayed in Manhattan, though the buzz probably isn't there any longer now the traffic isn't allowed through, but it is a great photo op and, now, an iconic NYC photo.

4 - I have travelled with my family to NYC on numerous occasions, and overall we chose that TS isn't the place to stay, Ask my 60 year old mum where she'd want to stay, and she won't say Times Square.

5 - Why pay $7 for a beer at the faux irish bars around Times Square, when in other areas, the same beer, in the same glass/bottle is only $4. I like to go to places that are unique and maybe not aimed at every tourist, and I am a bit of a beer monster, so this point is definitely not for the kids! I'd rather go to Bleeker Street, and drink in an irish bar with irish owners, and pay $4 or $5.

If you venture onto the TripAdvisor forums, they say the same things repeatedly to people, but the budgets for hotels are higher, so the recommendations are slightly different, but no local that I've spoken to thinks that Times Square is a good place to centre a New York vacation on. I agree.

Yes, this is my own opinion, but isn't every piece of help I offer just my opinion, which sometimes gets overlooked and I don't get any thanks, but on other times people have thanked me, come back to the forum and explained how wonderful it was, and I've had numerous private messages of thanks from people traveling alone, with partners, and with families.

So that's enough on this topic, and if people post hotel questions in the hotel thread, I'll happily ignore them and not mention ever again why I wouldn't stay in Times Square
