In that case, if you can get it back unrepaired, I would certainly sound out Direct Line and see what they advise as there must be some sort of manufacturer's warranty. On the optimistic side, you never know, if you chase the repair shop again without mentioning Empire going bust and act all innocent, they might just return it to you fully functioning with no charge.

The only phone number I have is when I got the TV from ED, so no idea where it went, only assume relatively local (i.e. Greater Manchester)

I tried that number today and it put me on hold for 20 minutes b4 I gave up (as I suspect it was being ignored as it isn't the number KPMG quote.

I've sent an e-mail so will have to wait my turn to see how long b4 they answer.
I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, you can't prove a thing! ;)

As it is under 12 months old, the manufacturer's warranty is still in force.

I have a Sagem TV I've been trying to return to Empire Direct, because of problems I have with it. I understood my contract was with Empire Direct - do Sagem have any legal responsibility to fix it?

    Thanks
  • martin wrote an article on this kind of thing, section 75. you can claim all the money back so long as some of it was on a credit card, and total cost was over 100 quid.

I believe in the first twelve months (or for however long the manufacturer guarantees the products, some are two years) the manufacturer backs the warranty, as long as you have a receipt showing when purchased. There may well be a telephone number to contact the manufacturer in the customer handbook that came with the TV (there certainly is in the handbook that came with my washing machine, for instance).

Consumer Direct would be able to give you definitive advice, but if a TV breaks down in the first twelve months, I reckon you would have a case under the 'not fit for the purpose' rules, as well as the manufacturer's warranty.

P.S. Lucky you did not manage to return it to Empire Direct!

I just phoned Panasonic regarding the 5 year warranties given by ED on TV's and was told that as I purchased my TV online there is nothing they can do. Apparently if I had purchased it at one of the stores, they would consider it.

Seems a bit unfair to me.

The lady said they have been inundated with calls about these warranties!

I don't think they actually hold much, if any, stock. They rely on being paid up front and then they buy the item and ship it to you. That was definitely the case when I bought my TV. Credit card was debited immediately, TV not delivered for a couple of weeks.

Anyone know anymore about the 5 year warranties??

The one they opened in Nuneaton has a smaller store front and a bigger warehouse, think they used that for internet sales.... But I actually have been in another 2, and one of them was in the warehouse where I went to check the packaging of a tv for it's rom version and the warehouse was pretty big....

I'm one of the unlucky people who have lost their jobs because of all this. Just to let everyone know, Empire Directors(who shall remain nameless)who have known about this happening for weeks, have still encouraged us,as staff, to take as much money from the "customer" as possible.Even today at work, before we were shut down in a matter of minutes(with no communication at all) allowed us to take hundreds of pounds in cash from people for deliveries that were never going to happen, without worry. i hope they feel as guilty as i do, but i doubt it!

    That is shocking.

TRUE STORY; I was in Empire Direct in Derby 2 weeks ago buying an accessory for my Laptop. The shop looked bare and they were selling off all the display TV's and Stereo equipment.

    After finding my item, I paid for it and had a conversation with the woman at the till, it went something like this;

    Me: "Is your store closing?"
Lady: "no!! why do you say that?"
Me: "well, you're selling all of your display stock, particularly your audio/video and your white goods section is bare".
Lady: "we always sell display stock in January"
Me: "Oh right, I just thought perhaps you might be a victim of the recession"

Question is; did she know or was she genuinely in the dark?

Either way, I feel sorry for the employees and I hope they find a new job soon. :D

Can't say for certain, although she was in her 40's at least - so probably yeh? Why...was it you :p ?
  • No she wasn't a manager. All managers @ Derby were male. As staff we were given the "mushroom treatment" (kept in the dark and fed a load of ****) so she was actually being straight with you.
