Dorry, I have 3 bags of lentils (500g), 5 bags of yellow split peas (500g), and currently 5 bags of s/r value flour, 5 x plain value flour, 2 strong white bread flour, 4 x wholemeal flour, 10 white hovis mixes, 10 granary hovis mixes.

I usually have more white bread flour than this, but need to restock, I usually buy 10 bags at a time and renew when stocks fall to 5. However, I have been trying to avoid a proper shop for a bit!

Anyway, all that said, I do a lot of baking and we eat a lot of bread, pittas, rolls, wraps, etc. I have four children all with huge appetites and often we gain extras at tea time! And I haven't long discovered that dd1 has been selling off my hobnobs and ds has been selling off my choc chip muffins - funniest bit is I make them in silicone cases and he makes them return them, they have to pay a deposit lol! So that is why I get through what seems like industrial quantities of flour!

bought another bag of yellow split peas, a bag of rice, 4p curry sauce x3, stocked up on stock cubes.

Had the dreaded letter today from Hydro electric about the 19.9 % increase for our electricity but they say to join their "better plan" to earn cash credits for being energy efficient. Anyone else done this? Will have to look it up online, they don't really explain it.

    Power to our Flour!

I totally agree with what Jasper, dorry,Brila and Nitha have said..and there but for the grace of god go I..if this had hit 3 years ago before I found this site that would be us suffering too  me and OH really should have learned our lesson the first time around but we didn't and many others like us didn't either...there will be so many affected by this and I do feel sympathy still because I know how easy it is to fall into that trap.

Mummysaver LOL you would be more than welcome here as we live by the same rules :D The stores are looking healthier than ever and all our bills are paid up and in front by one month to give us a bit of leeway if needed ;)
I'm just waiting for your kids to feature on Dragons Den now lol good for them, and well done you their 'products' must be lovely for the other kids to want them :)

I daren't even start to count what we have in ATM I'd probably die of embarassment!!! I blame Mr T's for having so much on special recently...suffice to say I usually work like this...

if its on special for 4 weeks and a silly price and something I usually buy anyway I buy 4 instead of 1 that then keeps the stocks up and allows for use until its on special again..*and just think how looooong the Hovis breadmixes have been on for..scary* :)

On looking into my pantry this afternoon, it seems that I don't seem to have a lot of flour and only one bag of lentils:eek:

how much does everyone think i need?? how much has everyone else got stashed away??

Dorry when starting a store from scratch the best way to do it is by jotting down each meal you all have for two weeks (some do a month)

Decide what amount you woud like to have on hand (say 3 months supply)
Next add up what you have used in those two weeks i.e 10 chicken breasts,1 stew steak,3lb of carrots and so on...

then times that by 6 (3 months divided by 2 weeks is 6) and you have the amount you need to have on hand...

of course this is just a guide and depending how prepared you want to be and also how your family likes to eat all needs to be taken into consideration as does storage space!!!

I just like to live with a nice old store and can live with tins falling on my toe everytime I open the larder cupboard and comments from my neighbours saying "if there's a war we know where to come!"

Just last week a friend of ours ran into trouble and I helped her out with a chicken, bag of mince, eggs, flour, baked a loaf of bread and pulled some greens and salad from the garden...she has 3 littlies to think of and it felt so good to be able to help.

Well...sounds like you have a couple of would-be entrepreneurs in the making....you could see the positive side of that....they might help their aged mother out in her forthcoming dotage...from all the money they make when they set up in business one way or t'other.:D

I read on, after following this link... It appears that we are now 'at war' with Iceland. (Diplomatically anyway)

    http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/news/article-1076011/Chelsea-Building-Society-latest-victim-Icelands-financial-meltdown-Brown-goes-attack.html

Forgive me if I'm wrong (according to DS I am always wrong) but I seem to recall Our Dear Martin recommending at least one of the Icelandic banks quite frequently on his weekly newsletter until fairly recently? :money:
  • So did everyone else, Charis!

I wonder how we got to have so many "smart" bankers who would trade in unsupportable debt? These people are supposed to have the sharpest noses and the toughest nerves ..... hang on a little minute ..... sharp noses, tough nerves .... do they go "squeak" and have long nasty tails too? And guess what, they desert sinking ships too!

I think that Martin comes out of this fairly well, all things considered, don't you?!

shhh..keep it under your hats chaps....OH is being treated to a lentil curry made in the SC on Sunday. He is not I hasten to add a lentil fan but I sneak them in every 6 months or so. Last time I tried dhal...a complete disaster but I remain unrepentant bad wife that I am:D:D Mind you I asked him if he would sack me earlier this week as I don't starch his shirts like one of student's wives does. He quipped back that he couldn't sack me because he'd never employ me. Cheeky beggar...right that's it I'm going to force feed him lentils from my stash until Christmas now:D:D
