George, I really don't think you need to worry about counting calories at your age. Just concentrate on all your activities and you'll be fine.

No, at some stages I took up cycling and walk everywhere anyway but no not a lot of exercise so my advice to you would be to up your calorie intake more than I did to compensate for the exercise because of the lack of it with me I had to cut the calories radically to counter act it, suggs, missyg do a lot of exercise they will be along and help you more:D

missyg very interesting mathematically workings:D but I would have to say for me personally some weeks are not like that at all, I have lost from 2 to 5 lb a week at the beginning eating the same, doing the same, week by week the loss has changed from anything at the end of it from 1lb 2lb to the xmas 5lb, sts,

oh, I am going to be rich:j £1.04p bid on one item on ebay out of 24 items up there:j

Loved the numbers, I shall have to have a go at working mine out. I've been trying to maintain using the 'hit and miss' approach - not very scientific.

Casper as you are in an active job and are planning to exercise I would suggest that you stick between 1400 & 1500 calories and see how that does you, you may find you need to up the calories even to stop the weightloss being too rapid.

  • afternoon everyone, hope you have had a nice weekend.

can i say stupid sunday opening hours and stupid council taking more than 6mths to grant pharmacy liscence *mutter mutter mutter*. i dont want to go out in the rain twice but i shall have to

casper given your bmr i would stick with 1500 cals a day to start with. any less and given your active job and exercising i think would be unrealistic. its possible you may need more than that.

missyg, thanks for that info. It has made me realise that my 5 mins on the treadmill is better than sitting here for that time. As I am very inactive compared to most it helps to see how every little does help.

I thought I'd come here to catch up on news but I am off to the gym instead!

Victory, taking into account slightly different starting weights each week (therefore different BMR), plus our monthly fluctuations and allowing that we don't eat, move and operate identically every week, I think 1-2lb is a very reasonable margin if you have roughly the same pattern from week to week.

So yours sounds right to me, in fact it sounds brilliant! The 5lb Christmas week was an anomaly just like our holiday gains etc :D Your BMR was higher than usual that week so the "same" amount of activity WOULD cause you to lose more anyway (not saying that's the only factor).

My own margin of error between predicted loss/gain and actual loss/gain has been within 1lb every week except for on two occasions since I've been doing this. If I didn't adjust the BMR every week it would be a totally different story though - the BMR is the baseline for the calculations.
