We did and it's right up there with my favorite Vegas experiences ever - we think it's worth a trip, but like anything, opinions will obviously vary. I'm pretty sure that the whole Walk with the Otters thing we did would come in at or very near number one single Vegas experience (though clearly not very Vegas-y).

I think it was about an hour's drive, and very straightforward...from the exit off of I-15 you just need to look for the signs that say 'zoo' with an arrow and follow along, we had no issues finding it.

As the place is staffed by volunteers, some days - like the one we went - they don't have as many staff as normal so fewer animals are available to interact with...but we still got to interact with a lot more than we normally would have.

It's not a big place, and it's not fancy...normally I would be somewhat nervous about a place like this, but I think the fact that they open to the general public just a few days a month maybe shows that they have more important concerns than making money. The folks who work there were really friendly and knowledgable and obviously loved the animals they were caring for.

Thanks Ferf thats great. Just what I wanted to hear. The only downside is that they are open the morning after we arrive so will likely be a little jetlagged. Oh well...I'm sure we'll get over it

If you're like us, you'll be up early anyway, and they are only open for a few hours...when we went (September) it was really too hot for us by the time we left, so getting there early is probably a good thing. :)

If you do think you will try the Walk With the Otters thing, you'll get wet, probably have wet otters in your lap...worth considering in terms of what clothes you wear that day.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

    Thats down to personal preference.

I am guessing Vdara wasnt there last time you went as you are not sure about the location, it is more central but my preference would be Encore just because I dont like City center which looks like a load of high rise office buildings and IMO is an eyesore, and of course Encore has a casino

Just back from my first LV visit and stayed at Vdara and loved it. Very central (via Bellagio) and we didn't even venture into the City Centre and fantastic inside. Booked a basic suite for around £75 a night (inc. resort fee) and got a fountain view. Visited the Encore to see the Ferrari showroom and it is a bit further down the strip but cannot comment on the rooms.

I know this isn't strictly vegas - but anyone got recommendations for wine country in southern california? Looking for somewhere reasonably priced (obviously!) like sonoma. Hows paso robles?

need a bit of advice. We're going to book Las Vegas going on May 9th and we can't decide between the Vdara and the Encore.

The Vdara looks like it's in a more central location but the Encore just looks a bit nicer / better facilities etc. We will be getting them for about the same price so that's not an issue.

We have been to Vegas before and stayed in the Bellagio, this is also an option but I fancied something different. We plan to see Criss Angel, Penn and Teller and possibly the Blue Man Group. We do use the casinos but its not a deal breaker to have it in the hotel.

Can anyone help out with which is best?

haven't stayed at the Encore, but will give another thumbs up for the Vdara... staying there for the 3rd time in September. It depends what you want from a hotel. Vdara is very relaxed, pretty quiet, has a boutique feel, you don't get many families staying there, is smoke-free, has a relatively small pool area but still big enough and lovely. it's a couple of minutes stroll from being in the Bellagio (via a walkway) or Aria, so casinos are very close. so it doesn't have the hustle and bustle of the bigger hotels.

The guy I'm going to Vegas with next month is a semi-pro poker player. His winnings for calendar year 2011 exceeded $100k

I wonder if he'll let me bankroll him for a tournament and we can split the winnings? Wishful thinking I guess :D
