Asprea Issues

16th jan.
last month i had a leak under my sink .being insured with the post office and having an extensive insurance policy.i thought i could get it resolved easily and painlessly.
i got the emergency plumber in,it seems that the mains stop !!!! was leaking.
before the plumber arrived and whilst bailing out the kitchen i measured the flow of water. 2 litres an hour for an unspecified amount of time.

so back onto the post office to report water damage to my kitchen (specifics later).they issue a third party claims management company(asprea) who at first seemed reasonably professional.

a surveyor was assigned to come and see me roughly a week later(23rd jan),he turned up flashed his card at me(not letting me handle or read it).
i took him into the kitchen.
he looked at the floor( 2 to 3 rows of tiles cracked due to warped water damaged floorboards)
at the under sink unit (chipboard carcass swollen and blown, laminate on doors lifted etc)
said all the rest of the units would come out and go back in ??????
worktop would be supported whilst this was going on ????
floorboards up and replaced and at that time check for underfloor damage.
took a couple of photos of the stop !!!!
pulled his tape measure in and out for a bit.
filled in a bit of paper work and said
anyone got allergies,i said we all have a touch of asthma but we manage.
that went down as a no on his paperwork.

left me a copy ,took my £100 excess and went off on his merry way, leaving me a list of items to pick for the job.

a variance order covers any other items or extra work he said.

Results: 1 x 1000mm carcass to replace(is actually 1200mm)
3m2 of floor tiling to replace
and some kickboard .
that was it ,he was useless ,didnt actually measure anything.didnt listen and wasnt interested in any way shape or form.

so i rang the personal claims adviser at asprea complained about the surveyor, and asked if this was the quality of service and skill level that i was to expect throughout my claim process and would it be possible to arrange for another survey to be carried out in a more professional manner, and was told if i wasnt happy then i was to get two quotes to cover the full scope of work and replacement items and submit them to the IOB management team including photo evidence where necessary in case they were needed at a later date, which i did.he informed me that if i wanted to use my own builders, that this was the path i had to follow.

wed:
the drying company came from rainbow and what an absolutely nice guy he was very sympathetic indeed.
he measured all the units, the dampness in the boards (100%),the walls(32 to 34%) and basically got a full picture of the kitchen sizes and visual damage, and left us a drier and dehumidifier.

he left saying he would recommend us contacting asprea(as would he) to request the tiles were lifted and kick strip taken off to aid the drying process.he would email the report to asprea that day.

great i thought sounds like someone who was actually interested.
rang asprea ,the next day and was told that i couldnt just request work done,i had to wait for the report to be received and assessed.fair enough,i thought these things take time.....

rang the next day apparently the email hadnt been received yet!

on the mon i rang again still hadnt received the report!
a bit fishy i thought

so i rang the drying company the next day, apparently the original report was emailed the previous friday and another was requested on mon at 4.30pm.
strangely enough when i rang asprea that day, they had "finally" recived it and yes someone would be contacting me to arrange taking the tiles up.

on the wed afternoon at 3.30pm 2 young lads turned up."we are here to lift your tiles and take the kickboard off" they said to my wife.
which is exactly what they did all of the tiles up(including the ones in the utility room),and left all of the tile adhesive stuck on the floorboards."sorry we cant shift that) and they left at 4.45,my wife signed the job card and asked why they had booked in at 13.30 and out at 1800.travelling expenses they said we are allowed to do that.

the 2 quotes from 2 seperate builders to cover all works and replacement items were submitted on mon.it took me about an hour before the fax machine at their end actually worked.

i rang asprea that day to ask if my quotes had been received, was told in no uncertain terms that i had to wait at least 3 days before they could see them on my records.and was to ring back after that time.

rang again on the thur, yes they had been received and no they hadnt been looked at yet!

rang on the fri not looked at yet.

rang on the mon,not looked at yet,

tue,was told it was over the 5 day limit and would now be escalated and various people emailed re. quotes.
was told i would be contacted the next day with some kind of info.

wed ,
rang asprea again.
oh yes i can see your quotes on file................
a long pause.
er
#oh
er
er
er
mmmm
mumble........
your cheapest quote seems to be 10 times the surveyors original assesment?
yes i said thats right,as i have explained to the pca originally the surveyor did not fully asess the level of damage or measure anything up.
i cant authorise that amount of money,i will have to send it back to the original surveyor and be re-asessed.

so here i am a month and a half later.

a scope of works from the surveyor which was inaccurate at best!!!!

i am unable to get a copy of rainbows report, being told that they(asprea) dont send them out.
surely i have rights under the use of information act to view what was written in that report!!!!!

on investigation after having the tiles and kickboard off for nearly 3 weeks whilst it was all dried out,a brief incomplete list of the actual damage and scope of work to the kitchen runs to the following:

1 x 1200 mm sink unit wood effect sides
2 x cupboard doors if they can be matched
1 x 1000 mm plain white corner carcass
1 x 600 mm end unit wood effect sides
kick strip all round.
approx 8 to 12 floorboards warped and needing replacing
all tiles now need replacing as the asprea workmen took the lot up not just 3m2 to the tune of approx another 3m2
walls needing water damaged plaster chipping off and replastering
2 worktops removing and replacing
tiling needing re-doing due to the plaster needing to be off
and the list goes on,
not even thought of or seen under the floorboards as of yet apparently their is a possibility of rot or mold.....

a kitchen floor with tile adhesive and shards of ceramic tiles embedded into it.and my two young children not being allowed in there for safety reasons.
apparently i can get the original guys back in to finish the job!!!!!!

Would you?

numerous phone calls to asprea chasing them!!!!

empty promises from asprea to keep me informed!!!!

shoddy and slap hazard workmen ripping the insurance company off and lying about times on jobs.and not completing the specified tasks!!!!

i am the consumer here, do i really have to put up with this apparent lack of care and quality of service?

i am left feeling as if i am a second class citizen, who in the eyes of asprea doesnt really matter.

where do i go from here ?

i was told on wed that the report would be emailed to the surveyor who was "familiar with the job" and it would take 48 hrs to get an answer.
so i (again) was to ring them on monday.which seems odd cause unless my maths is way out, from wed lunch to fri lunch is 48 hrs......

in my opinion all the original surveyor will do is cover his shoddy and innacurately put together report.

should i wait and see what parodies appear from the surveyor?

should i get an independent surveyor to come and asess the situation, and foot the bill myself?

should i get in touch with my insurance company and underwriters and talk to them?

do i get the impression that nobody is really interested in my family`s needs and safety, and that all they are doing is trying to make a quick and easy buck from the insurance company?

ive kept all the correspondance so far, including photos.
i still would like a copy of the rainbow report and also a copy of the dryness certificate, any one think ill get them?

dissolusioned to say the least

  • there are a few threads on here about Asprea, dont know if there is anything similar to your situation

  • Hi
I'm afraid your story is very familiar having undergone a similiar situation last year with asprea, and there sub contracted work man. To cut a very long story short we eventually threatened legal action as we were left with a bathroom that our children couldn't enter as it was unsafe.

The only advice i can give is that we were far more successful once we got on to our insurance company and got them involved, and it probably helped that we sent photo evidence of there appaling work to every manager we could think of !!! Our case actually ended up with a Asprea surveyor and a representive from our insurance company having a heated discussion in my bathroom over the standard of workmanship and was over heard saying "if they sue us , your in big trouble". At which point i had to stop earwigging at the door as i was giggling so much.

Sorry i haven't got anymore advice but we did eventually get our bathroom sorted by insisting that a different contractor was bought into do the job again which resulted in asprea having to foot the bill !!
  • it seems as tho there are a lot of valid complaints and issues with asprea, it appears as thou NU couldnt really give a damn however.

what do you do about incompetence though?

Request a cash settlement of the claim based upon your estimates. NU cannot refuse the request.
  • this is brilliant!!

it makes me feel so much better knowing that i am not alone in my frustrations with ASPREA. below (should you wish to read it) is the email i sent to NoRWICH UNION who are my actual insurance company. they themselves were good. ASPREA. lies. lies incompetance and lies. initially, all went well. (had a flood) drying company called in and they set about doing there job. but from when the floor was declared dry and ready to be re fitted. nothing. we waited an age for it to be sorted. and i would still be waiting now if i didnt threaten all sorts of nasty things (watchdog, small claims court etc etc).

when they first visited we were given the option of getting contracters in ourselves and 'cash settling' or letting them do all the dirty work. ADVICE: DO NOT LET THEM ARRANGE CONTRACTERS FOR YOU. YOU MAY WELL NEVER GET IT DONE. anyway, heres my email to norwich union. enjoy the read:

Hopefully you will recall my email and our phone conversation of yesterday (reference numbers and previous email below).

firstly, credit to you, you have yourself done everything you said you would. and within the time you said you would do it and i thank you for that.

you mentioned that your line manager was aware of the situation. can you please forward this email for his / her attention so that a)they are made aware you yourself are doing a good job and b)hopefully it might get things moving a little quicker.

which brings me nicely onto Asprea and the 37,000 contractors who have not, well, havent done a lot really. you told me yesterday asprea would be calling to give us a firm date that the 'floor specialists' will be coming to fit our floor. this phone call never arrived. and to give you an idea of where the problem is, asprea, in order to give me a date for fitting the floor, would need to call Galliford try. galliford try would then need to call 'spacers'. thats 3 different companies we need to battle past to get an answer.

I am now at my wits end with this (as i said previously, 4 weeks ago the floor was declared dry and ready to fit and i have suffered 4 weeks of broken promises (lies????) and false hope).

it would take me 3 days to employ the services of a local floor specialist and have our floor laid. and yet its already taken asprea 4 weeks and still nothing.

now, before i do actually lose the will to live i have a plan. and its a simple one. either Asprea (or one of the 37,000 sub contractors) give me a firm date to fit our floor (and this date will need to be within a week (THATS FLOOR FITTED WITHIN A WEEK, NOT A DATE TO DO IT GIVEN WITHIN A WEEK)or you guys give me the go ahead to arrange floor specialists myself. i dont mind which. i just want my floor fitted and to move back home. i do not think this is an unfair request. i am in no way trying to fleece any extra money from you, infact, by doing it myself i will be saving you £250 a week in rent payments.

I will give you till ten this morning to read and digest this email and run things over with your line manager. do you think either yourself or said manager could give me a call at ten o'clock? (i do apreciate i am not your only customer but i have been patient enough already). if come ten o'clock i have not had a call i will call you myself. and for the record, although you guys are my insurance company it is not you i am annoyed with and as such you can expect me to be polite and (hopefully) not to wound up when we speak.

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you have had. Unfortunately NU's approved tradesmen have always had a reputation. They also experienced problems with the previous company. Most companies have problems with national tradesmen supplies it must be the problems of scale, its just Norwich Unions attract a particular amount of complaints.

Try copying beccus in on this as she is a NU customer service manager, she is often on here helping people and will be interested in your case rebecca.sibley@norwich-union.co.uk

If any one reads this and the many other posts on Insurers recommended builders it is normally best to use a good local builder who has a good reputation.

bless you, you are good at this!

Beccus, I've been out of insurance for a few months but this is just like the good old days, someone moaning about a Norwic Union approved tradesman....Oh the memories
  • so apparently asprea "will call me on monday",no doubt in my mind that i will have to ring them.
the IOB team is now asessing my quotes,in the mean time i have no kitchen floor, unless walking on tile adhesive, wood splnters and shards of tiles is classed as acceptable!!!!
my house is upside down with bits of kitchen stuff all over.
i cannot sleep properly ,my wife cannot sleep properly and my kids ask me daily when the kitchen and floor are coming back.i am writing this at 5.20 am.

    so now what?
    independant surveyor?
    insurance ombudsman?
    emails to NU?
    watchdog?
    legal action?
or just wait it out and put up with more lies and untrained contractors?

we are nearly at the end of our tether,i cannot beleive this has gone on for so long.......

after research and contacting consumer helplines,Asprea ,by refusing to issue me with a copy of Rainbows report are in breach of the freedom of information act 2000.
    is this correct?
    can anyone confirm this?

    andy (tired and p****d off)

Andy if you read post 7 and the 8 you will see my recommendation to email beccus and then her subsequently posting.

I bet Beccus has already been trying to find your claim on the NU claim to read up on it to, although she may not be able to find it without further info like your post code or policy number.

If you search the forums under "beccus" you will find that she has permission to act on Norwich Unions behalf on MSE forums and that MSE have allowed her to be open about who she works for which MSE do not normally allow / encourage This is because both NU and MSE realise that this is beneficial to Norwich Unions Customers. This permission is very rare and I do not know of any other Insurance Companies who allow a member of staff to represent them on MSE or for MSE to allow it (I may be wrong).

Do a search of the forums under "Beccus" and you will see the good work she has done on cases such as yours.

Norwich Union are a good Insurer, sometimes they or Asprea make mistakes and it can be difficult getting things sorted out but this is not Norwich Unions intention. Send Beccus a brief email with your details so she can look into it on Monday and try and get something sorted out ASAP for you.No doubt she will ask you for a more detailed email at a later date so she can investigate it thoroughly.

You will be surprised how quickly Beccus will be able to bang some heads together and get things moving for you.

Get an email over to Beccus asap so she can have a look at your claim, Beccus is a senior member of the customer experience team which is why NU and MSE gave her the permission. So she can sort problems out and she genuinly will want to help you. Stop worrying, you have made the right move by posting on MSE, things should get sorted out now Beccus is involved. It won't be long before you home is sorted out properly.

Aspreas will normally not allow you to see the report, you may be able to request sight of it through the data protection act or once Beccus is involved she may be able to provide you with a copy.
