None of the brokers I have worked for are paid commissions by the Loss Adjusters for work.

Sorry Dacouch I think you may have misread my post.

What I meant was that Cunninghams builders pay a commission back to Cunninghams and not the broker.

I am not sure I understand your post - but are you saying that you have previously been appointed by loss adjusters, Cunninghams, as a contractor and then asked to under price the work, only to subsequently make up the shortfall with variation payments? This sounds very much like the business practice of Asprea!! They all seem to be the same.

My brokers have assured me that they are only coming to validate my quote, not to supply their own quotes. I hope this is the case.

123naj do you know the builder whose quote is the lowest quite well? I say this as sometimes it can be helpful for everyone if the the builder is there so they can go through everything with the LA there and then. So if the LA tries to say they are not sure a certain wall needs replastering the builder can give the reasons why etc. If there are any issues they can often be ironed out there and then rather than via correspondence which can take time.

Have a word with the builder and ask if they can attend at the same time, there is a good chance in the current climate they can.

(The LA will almost certainly go for the cheapest quote providing they are quoting for all of the work).

As a broker I often attend these meetings with my clients if they client wants, if you want your broker there to assist you then don't be scared to ask. Most decent brokers will have no problem coming out providing you give them notice as its part of what you are paying them for. The broker should have in depth knowledge of your policy and Insurance in general so if the LA tries to cut a corner or tell you something is not covered they should be able to use their knowledge to sort it out there and then.

Dacouch - thanks for your very helpful advice.

I wasn't aware that I could ask the broker to attend. I am sure my builder will be willing to come.

I live in a flat, so my policy is a communal one - does this make a difference?

The fact its a communal policy should not make much difference, you contribute to the premium.

Explain to the broker the problems you have been having and how you would appreciate their attendance. I enjoy going on these types of appointments as its actually what our job is about. I'm sure they also enjoy attending claims meetings, try and give them as much notice as possible in case they have to juggle appointments. Don't worry about them having to cancel other appointments as other clients do not mind having an appointment re scheduled when you explain to them its to handle an urgent claim.

I have written to BBC Watchdog today and i hope they are willing to take the case on as the whole things has been unethical and inappropriate. watchdog@bbc.co.uk. They have a new series starting in April... fingers crossed ! They also have a blog which i will post onto this evening. I urge you all to do the same! Given enough complaints… which I can see there are plenty of… iam sure it would be taken up and make good viewing! My wife is really stressed now and its effecting our health. I was promised a call today by NU and now iam being told “Asprea have not come back to me with an update as yet. As soon as i have an update i will be in contact with you to discuss.”…. sorry but I have sent ALL the information they have asked for… and want to get this sorted! My mother is also very ill and needs to stay with us. However the spare bedroom and bathroom are out of use so what the hell do we do? ……
