There is a way, al-bee it non standard, left field, and i would not do it, but best budget option and to make the laptop perform... Puppy Linux. It will do everything you want to do and fast too all on a bootable usb stick or cd. Very virus and spyware resistant too. It does look windows-ish too, possibly more than 10 does to windows 7 users.
I have to ask, does he want a laptop? small screen, smaller keys on keyboard. Would a desktop not be better?0 -
Don't usually agree with you but this time, I think you are right!
What's the best 'budget' option?
Nothing much around at the moment.
If this; https://mcscom.co.uk/product/dell-inspiron-15-3558-i3-5005u-2-0ghz-4gb-500gb-15-6-hd-win-10-1yrs-rtb-wty-mln120/ was a doddle to upgrade to SSD, I would say consider it for around £225 including SSD. But it isn't, so don't.
Wait to see what appears perhaps.0 -
Agreed with above ..
Dont bother upgrading that old thing, it's always going to be garbage..
For context, i used to work at siemens - and even they dont use their own kit !!0 -

To be fair, he's had ten to eleven years out of it and it's still working.
They could upgrade the CPU to a T5500, install 4 GB of RAM and the SSD.
CPU perhaps £3, RAM £11.73 SSD £25
£40 in total will make it more usable for browsing and simple office tasks.

The last twice my 'clients' have bought stuff from there, they had to send it back
I think not, but if he could get something for around £200, he would be delighted I reckon.
That seems unlucky. What I've received from them was 'as new' and excellent value.
What happened on the two occasions about which you know?0 -

£3 CPU allows the install of Windows 7 64 bit. RAM and SSD will bring the spec up to a nine year old Toshiba that I use. Which actually does all I need it to do.
But ten to eleven years old is really pushing it.0 -

2nd one, can't really remember - but to resolve it you had to take the back off to remove the battery to drain the system of charge - not really practical! It wouldn't switch on!0 -
