I'd suggest avoid - very slow.
EDIT: not as bad I originally thought; usable with the SSD

I completely missed that they included the full model number within their sales blurb.

So they are the only retailer in the whole world that has this model.
    https://www.asus.com/uk/Laptops/ASUS-Laptop-E402WA/wheretobuy/

Even the ASUS UK website appears confused; https://uk.store.asus.com/notebooks/vivobook-series/asus-e402wa-ga002t-1-5ghz-e2-6110-14-1366-x-768pixels-blue-notebook.html

It lists E2-6110 in the URL, but then links to a different laptop.

So the model is an Argos Exclusive

It will be an improvement on what he has, but don't expect ten years of usage out of this one.
The Dell has a better foundation. Better CPU and screen for starters. It's just the fiddliness of popping the SSD in that concerns me for you.

It's not that bad. Just not as straightforward as it could be.
Otherwise I would say the Dell it is.

    Another option; http://www.dell.com/learn/uk/en/ukdfh1/campaigns/first-time-customer-dell-outlet-uk

That way you can pick up this ok Dell with a Full HD screen; DELL5.jpg

    for under £230.

The caveat? that it has a crappy HDD, albeit 1 TB.

It does have an M2 slot, so two places where you can slot in a solid state drive.
Bad news on that is that you have to remove the bottom lid to do so, as there is no specific access panel.
The way of the new laptops these days.

    M-i-L has an iPad

An iPad would then rule me out of assisting him with it - hateful things IMHO (sorry)

    This
    http://www.dell.com/en-uk/work/shop/laptops/inspiron-15-5000/spd/inspiron-15-5570-laptop/bn57020
says £369 + vat + delivery which is probably £450 in total
    Less 10% = 405

He would not NEED your assistance, I am not a fan of them myself but I have seen how people find them easier.

We are probably of generation that want to get under bonnet and fix things, but the Apple offering is to force you to work a certain way but have no option to go under the bonnet.

Elderly seem to be more tolerant of that, there will be some resistance to change but if most of their activity is online (email, browsing, office) they will be fine.

    I disagree wholeheartedly.
A tablet is not a substitute for a laptop/PC with larger screen and a full keyboard.
Tablets are good for portability....and that's it. Then with Apple there is just the incompatibility with everything else. Then in a couple of years it is made deliberately obsolete.
I have an iPad and it just sits in the cupboard. Only comes out when there is an App i need to use that isn't on Windows. Revolut, for example.

I help one elderly person who loves her tablet compared to slow-and-always-updating-laptop-with-W10-and-slow-HDD; but then I get a phone call every other day for me to come and help her (**) type an email reply or fill in a web form.
(**) by help that means I do all the typing.
