Sorry ... confused again dot com ...

    This
    http://www.dell.com/en-uk/work/shop/laptops/inspiron-15-5000/spd/inspiron-15-5570-laptop/bn57020
says £369 + vat + delivery which is probably £450 in total
    Less 10% = 405

Sorry, I perhaps didn't make it clear that I was referring to Dell Outlet

That laptop in question is £209 + VAT.

    DELL6.jpg

    I guess Dell will deduct 10% from the ex. VAT price. £209 - £20.90 = £188.10
    £188.10 + 20%(VAT) = £225.72

    I disagree wholeheartedly.
A tablet is not a substitute for a laptop/PC with larger screen and a full keyboard.
Tablets are good for portability....and that's it. Then with Apple there is just the incompatibility with everything else. Then in a couple of years it is made deliberately obsolete.
I have an iPad and it just sits in the cupboard. Only comes out when there is an App i need to use that isn't on Windows. Revolut, for example.

I agree with you wholeheartedly.....for me.

But for the elderly I find that once they get the hang of it they are away.

I hate Apple for their business practices, for locking techs out, for refusing to roll back apps or updates, in fact I could have a real old bytch about Apple, however, there are a few things they do well.

I have an iPhone and there is no substitute, Google has an awful UI in all of it's software, Microsoft lost the plot when it tried. I used a friends Samsung the other day, it was one of those top end ones with the screen to the edge, it was AWFUL. Options buried in the dafted subset of menus, yet even worse than iPhone, blooody thing kept doing stuff because I was holding it around sides.

Now I find there are some Apps I do not really want on my phone, things like games, so I am thinking of getting a cheap tablet to see if I can wean myself off Apple. A friend of mine got a cheap £40 one to act as a dedicated screen for his Mavic Pro Drone as his iPhone was too loaded with Apps.

The iPad is only sucessful because of the Apps (as you confirm) for the rest of it we have to grab our ankles and pretend we enjoy it.

Still, for the OP and his or rather the Senior, I stick by my recommendation of an iPad.

I don't know if you noticed, but most of your argument was about phones.
We are talking here about substituting a device with a 15.6in screen and a full keyboard with something akin to a large smartphone.
Of course the elderly can get used to it. Just like they can get used to laptops.
The elderly aren't a single iPad loving group. They are individuals.
How much is the 'budget' iPad you are suggesting?

Just remember, as reiterated in post #1 and #27 - they already have an iPad.
M-i-L uses it mainly, but he uses it sometimes too.
If he loved it he would get himself one .....
Maybe I'm colouring his judgement! :D

If he is not running Win10 then it is likely to be a big change for him.

I did not read ALL of your old thread but I saw you previously updated the RAM, but a CPU and SSD will give it a few more years.

Otherwise based on the fact that he is going to have a lot of change anyway then an iPad is the way I would go.

Actually based on your latest reply I would ask him to try the iPad for two weeks to see if he can manage with one.

W10 and Classic Shell doesn't look (hardly) any different to W7 IMHO

    Seriously....you seem a bit obsessed.
First of all, they asked for a budget option. Once again. how much is the iPad you so often mention?
The CPU, RAM, SSD upgrade option has already been mentioned.

The fact is, that he already has access to an iPad. So they will have the choice to use whichever is more convenient to the task at hand.

Not sure really. M-i-L has an iPad.
He's had a Windows PC for nearly 20 years now so is comfortable with that. *Maybe* he likes the idea of his own machine in his own space (the back bedroom), his sort of 'men's shed', even if he has a shed as well! :rotfl:

A Chromebook could be a very good candidate for him.

Exactly what I was thinking. Can get 2nd hand ones on Gumtree for £60, if he doesn't get on with it I'm sure you could sell for the same money. Maybe you could borrow one from a friend?
