Perhaps because BASSA and Unite don’t represent the pilots?

It’s the pilots and what BA have asked of BALPA, and what they have given up over the past few years that seem to be the issue here. 93% of the pilots voted in favour of the strike action so it would seem something is wrong.

    Thanks for that explanation. :)

It's possibly that the employees who've accepted the offer are lower earners and have jumped at the 11%. The pilots would be in a better position financially to take strike action and hang out for improved conditions of service.

What happens if they strike on day of return flight will I get back same day on another airline as I fly back on Monday and have to be at work Tuesday as some passengers have booked flights and hotels separately and might not get a refund on hotel

Same boat as me. I can get their but possibly not back

What are my rights if there is a flight delay due to strike action?

If there is a large delay delay, the airline has to make your wait a reasonably comfortable one.
You will be entitled to a phone call, refreshments, a meal, accommodation and transport to the accommodation. Your flight must be:
    • delayed by two hours or more and be less than 1,500km
    • delayed by three hours or more and flying within the EU, or between 1,500-3,500km outside the EU
    • delayed by four hours or more and flying more than 3,500km outside of the EU
Your airline should provide these for you. If not, keep any receipts and contact its customer service to make a claim.

If you cant get a refund on a prebooked hotel and cant make the booking due to the strike, you can claim on your insurance. Insurance will also pay out compensation (mine is £100) if a strike delays me more than a day

But bear in mind that some insurers won't pay out if news of the strike was in the public domain before you took the policy out. Not sure whether that has to be concrete dates or whether they can even use that against a more general threat...

Im sure i read aslong as no dates were announced when you took it out you are covered. This is why its always best to get insurance the minute you book a holiday

Out of interest, is there anyway to guess what likely dates they will announce strike action? Im assuming they decide based on certain factors, rather than just pick random dates

They have to give at least 14 days notice, which takes us into mid to late August. There is, of course, a bank holiday towards the end of the month when all airlines are likely to be busy, and the chance to transfer to an alternative flight may be almost impossible. If I were the union, I would be tempted to strike for 4 days over that weekend and cause the maximum chaos

Even one day of strike action could throw out schedules for days with crews in wrong locations and long-haul down route rest days out of sync. Rather than a block of four strike days they would likely create as much disruption with two one day strikes spaced say two or three days apart, only losing two days pay in the process.

It happens. The NHS pay deal was rejected by the GMB but accepted by all other Unions.

According to BA it would cost them 40 million per day of strike action. BAPLA claim that:

Seems BA would be stupid not to settle if those figures are correct

But if they gave in the unions could threaten to strike every year for bumper wage rises.

Also look what is POSSIBLY going to happen to a lot of staff with Ryannair,Mr o,Leary has told them that due to their pay demands/increases along with other factors, staff will be loosing their jobs, what good is a large payrise if your job goes just after.
ITS NOT EASY TO GET EVERYTHING WRONG ,I HAVE TO WORK HARD TO DO IT!

Well they cant threaten every year as this is a 3 year contract.

Also it isn't the wage increase they're unhappy with. They want a % of the profits that the pilots themselves have helped BA make due to taking cuts when the company was struggling. Execs take massive bonuses etc when the company do well, so why shouldn't staff too have abit of that?
