500 applicants for 1 job?

So a relatives employer advertised a job for a dispatch clerk in a factory, pay slightly over min wage, nothing special about the job or the money really, I applied myself and heard nothing back so enquired, they told me that the company received between 400 - 500 applications for 1 job

Do you think this is the general level of competition for jobs these days or is this a 1 off?

You will get jobs that have hundreds of applicants, but you will also get positions that only get a handful. This is nothing new, when I applied for my first job there were 400 applicants, and that was twenty years ago, part time sales assistant at Boots.

When they advertised the jobs at J.L.R., I heard they had over 30,000 applicants

But there were 1,000 jobs available - thirty applicants to every position is not overly high ;)

I applied for a part time receptionist job in an opticians recently and I didn't hear anything. Then weeks later I got a letter saying sorry it had taken so long to reply because they had over 100 applicants and they had just got to me.

If you assume that every local job seeker will be expected to apply for every local job they are even borderline qualified for that is a lot of applicants. Jobs which require rarer qualifications and experience will get fewer.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Well this is true, I wonder what percentage of people would actually want said job vs those made to apply to keep benefits? Doesn't really matter I guess but it shows how damn hard it is to get any old job in the UK these days and as you say the less skills required the higher the applications I guess. I read an article in a newspaper yesterday which said eastern Europeans have more success in finding work in the UK than unemployed Brits.
