Windows 8

Just upgraded to windows 8 pro (£49.99) from PC World - Bought the disk set (comes with 32bit and 64bit dvds) just in case anything happens in the future whereby something needs a "Please insert the installation disk that came with....."!!! Anyway, would like to add that the speed difference is very noticeable - Windows 8 pro with IE scrolls and loads pages faster. Office WORD 2010 loads quicker, installations are quicker and so on. I can see Windows Vista users loving Windows 8 :rotfl:
It is also compatible with, the now old, corel photimpact 13 software which was hit and miss with windows vista but okay with windows 7. Upgrades are always scary when you feel you might lose some valuable software, hence why I recommend you go for the compatibility test first that comes with the windows 8 download (i.e. Microsoft's website downloads a 5.18 mb upgrade assistant before going any further with the installation/purchase process).

I spent £15 for the upgrade and feel I've been robbed.
Dirty big start screen, click on any so called apps (or collection of Chocolate teapots) and you are back to Windows 7 sans start menu button.
If this is the future of Microsoft I'm off to buy a Mac!
PS Charms !!!!!!, setting, search, and start icons, whats that all about? That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
I re-insalled Vista on an ageing laptop a few months ago because it was so slow but after re-installing all my old apps it is a slow as ever (up to 30 minutes to boot). I have 1GHz processor and 1GB RAM - the minimum required for Windows 8.
I do have same ancient hardware (printer & scanner) which may not work with Wndows 8 but I don't need these to work with the laptop but I will be able to check they do work on the laptop with a view to upgrading the desktop to Windows 8 as well.
Hopefully, it will bring a new lease of life into the old laptop. Thanks for the tip about upgrading for just £15 should I upgrade my Windows 7 desktop!0 -
Hi
I am trying to install Windows 8, I have checked it will work etc, but each time the install gets to 100 %, I get Access Denied and then if fails. I cannot find much help information on-line, has anybody else come across this on install?
I am trying to upgrade rather than do a fresh install, I want to keep as much information as possible.
Thanks
Martin.Been there, done that, now I want to do it cheaper!!0 -
The preview version had a registry option to reinstate the Start/Windows menu, but they took it out of the retail one.
There are some freeware and shareware apps to add one, but it seems daft that you should go to that trouble (and even pay an additional 20% of the cost of the OS) to make it work.0 -

As a previous Vista user I am delighted at the improvement with my upgrade, have a few queries, but it's looking good to me.
Waiting to see if I get the promised Media Centre software.0 -

What like every tablet and smartphone ? none of them do exactly what I want out of the box.
And just because you hate the new start menu so much that you cant start programs because you cant bare to be dragged away from the desktop for 5 seconds, doesn't mean it doesn't work.
Other people have no problems starting programs in windows 8.
I dont get why this is such a massive issue for people, I'm a programmer, I work with computers all day and In total I spend about 1 min a day finding a launching programs.
If that 1 min is your biggest problem with your operating system, you have a really good operating system.
I dont massively like the new start menu, on the other hand I know from using it; its quicker and easier to use.
I dont like the way you start apps on macs either, lauchpad is like the new start menu and the apps folder is just a mess like every other finder window.
But i'm not going to stop using either0 -

In my daily work I run multiple applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Visio, Project), browser windows to Service Desk & SharePoint, terminal sessions to UNIX & Linux servers and RDP desktops to Windows servers and VMware servers, GUIs for a couple of backup tools, and a selection of other things.
I have an appreciation of the principles of user interface design, and Windows 8 is not it.
I don't hate it, but I do not see why I should be dragged away from the desktop to a different user interface and possibly scroll sideways a couple of pages in order to run an app on the desktop that I was just at, and which I could just run in-situ in the previous version of the OS.
The new interface makes it more difficult to do my work, and for that reason it is a retrograde step.
It can be difficult to say whether one interface is better than another, and I use OS X, IOS & Blackberry on phones & tablets, Windows 7 & XP, Ubuntu & Red Hat Linux (inc CentOS and Oracle), Solaris. Of them all, Windows 8 is the one that gets in the way of doing things and has an inconsistent user interface. Change is not always a bad thing, but in this case it is.
I've got 4 Windows 8 licenses available, but I've only bothered to install one on a test system. A colleague in another company tried using it, but something went wrong and they reverted.0 -
Please please please don't pay £25...

I used this last night to get a £10 discount voucher for Windows 8 Pro. It's for an offer they were doing for people buying new Windows 7 pc's but there's no verification process, so just fill in the gaps and get a free discount code!
£15 for windows 8 Pro!
Even weirder as the upgrade does not verify anything it is perfectly possible to upgrade "illegal" copies of XP/7 to a legal W8 Pro version. Very difficult to believe MS aren't fully aware of this and perhaps even made it deliberately so.0 -
Ive put gadgets back on,as I like having my CPU,network stats, large clock etc on the desktop
I can see the use of the start screen on a touch screen, not sure on the PC
early days and i'll see how it goes0
