Rather than be miserable and bitter for my whole trip that a Ryan Air cardboard box and jobsworth cost me £50, I decided to purchase one of these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261080007120?var=560145182438&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
Thanks all for help.0 -

And what was it like when you got it?
Is it lightweight?0 -
Not arrived yet, I'll post back here with a report when it arrives if it's useful.0

Thank you, it would be very useful0 -
They are great very lightweight and will hold loads you just have to be a bit careful how you pack it as anything with weight will make it bulge at the bottom just put a luggage strap round the bottom to pull it in a bit and it's fine0

Thanks for that.
Good idea re the luggage strap0 -
I can confirm what tori.k has said above: they are great and very lightweight. I've posted up a Picasa webalbum of some pictures I took of it. And here's my thoughts on it:
Pros:
Very lightweight (I make it just under 780grams)
Within dimensions (I make it 53x34x19.5cm)
Comes with wheels
Straps are adjustable to an extent for longer armed people
Comes in an array of colours
Full-zip opening at top
Front pocket for some travel docs or small essentials, easily accessible
Cons:
Top zip opening means you'll have to think ahead whilst packing and not pack anything you might need at the airport near the bottom!
So lightweight that it might not be very durable
Not particularly stylish
Overall, I'm impressed and it's good value for money. It will be worth it for the peace of mind knowing it will be under the weight and dimension restrictions.
If you want to maximise the stuff you can take with you at the cheapest possible cost, then this is the bag for you.
Great suggestions above of wrapping a luggage strap around it to ensure it doesn't bulge over the dimensions!0 -
