Today, I bought the 20" Dunlop Trolley Case from a sportsdirect shop in Tamworth. With the handle on the top (not the expandable handle) it was about 1cm over the 55cm limit for RyanAir, all other measurements fell comfortably within the limits. I used a drill to take the tops off the two rivets holding the handle, unzipped the inner lining and pulled the rivets out allowing me to remove the handle completely. The measurement, with wheels etc. is now exactly 55cm. There are two small holes where the rivets used to be, but they are hardly visable at all and it only took me 10 minutes to complete the task.

Hi....could someone tell me if this went thro ok with ryanair? Im flying tomo and have this suitcase x

  • I travelled Ryanair from Bournemouth last week. I tried my bag in the Ryanair cages at the check-in expecting it to be a tight fit (it was a soft bag that was slightly over in two dimensions but could be compressed to bring it in line). In fact it fitted in ridiculously easily. Indeed I would estimate the cages are about 5 cm bigger in every dimension than Ryanair's quoted limits. The cages say that if your bag fits then you can take it on board and Ryanair tell you to check your hand luggage using those cages if in doubt, so I can't really see how they could then raise an objection at the gate even if you are oversize. They can't have it both ways, though I guess they'd have a good try...

The cages at the gates looked the same size and there were a few of the cardboard boxes around too. There were absolutely no checks on hand luggage size and some of the cases I saw carried on board were ridiculously big, looking a good 35 cm in their smallest dimension. Not only that but handbags weren't required to be put into hand luggage. It was a bit annoying actually as I made a determined effort to play by the rules.

As an aside, passports weren't checked to see if they matched the passengers faces, let alone the details submitted at check-in, so it wasn't a particularly thorough operation. Just to add to the irritation the passengers in the priority queue might have been led to the plane first (taking it on trust the others would wait) but they were still queuing for the front steps while non priority passengers boarded at the back. Still Malaga had no priority queue at all, just first come first served (it may vary between flights, we were bussed to the plane from the oldest gates, whereas another Ryanir plane was connected by airbridge in the newest ones).

At Bournemouth there is a sign up saying that Ryanair allow you to take on one carrier bag containing items purchased airside in addition to your one item of hand luggage but presumably that might not be the case elsewhere.
    Hi
I hope your right about the ryanair cage being slightly bigger as i just bought a dunlop 51 mm hard hard shell case, most of measurements are correct but was little concerned with depth as its 21 cm and not 20 cm, i asked few friends and said be ok,, also i bought from a online shop who say all there bags conform to ryanair luggage ,, called jeteasy.ie
    i know in few weeks
also saw on reviews on argos where some hard shell cases are 24cm and reviewers say the passed ryanair ,, so we see

The problem with asking the opinion of friends is that they are not going to be the people having the final say about whether your bag is too big or not.

The post you quoted was actually dated 3-and-a-half years ago (11th August 2010) so things may have changed since then - either for the better or for worse.

I looked at lots of bags that all said 'OK for cabin' but when I physically checked the measurements I found them to be bigger than stated.

Hope you manage to get through OK.

You do know about Ryanair's cabin baggage policy.....?
Due to cabin space limitations only 90 cabin bags (55 x 40 x 20 cms) can be carried in the cabin, any remainder will be carried free of charge in the aircraft hold.

Haven't done much travel with ryanair only with smaller bag,, but first time getting a cabin hard shell case i got , to use with ryanair as traveling longer flight distance, so tried to get close to max where 55cm x 40cm x20cm ,max of 10 kg ,,

i got a hard shell case with 55cm x 37cm x 21cm. im told i should be ok with 21cm unless there a problem if they use there cardboard luggage checker, the metal frame i be ok withh,, i guess it depends on ryanair staff on the day too if they be a pain or not,,

heres the link to case i bought
    ryanairsizecabinbags.com

all there cabin bag and cases are to be ryanair tested , i even rang 2 times to confirm 2 different cases i was looking at, by e.mail and by phone
i going early may, i post here how i get on , might help others here looking at different cases

as you said,, a lot of cabin cases are different in size to what they state.
it was sad i had to bring a tape measure to check sizes as the cases differ to what your told,, specially hard shell cases,, either too small or just too big,, this was closest hard shell case i could find to ryanairs measurements without out costing too much, i looked at ryanair cases they where selling on there site but seemed over priced not surprising the brand they picked on there site
  • my girlfriend uses ryanair a lot , think so far, shes been traveling with them over 12 years, in that time only asked 3 times to put her carryon cabin case in the luggage checker, seems asked more with checking your weight of the cabin case or bag .

I hope you'll be OK with your bag.

TBH, in my (limited) experience of flying with Ryanair, they only seemed to ask the owners of hand luggage that looked maybe too big to put them in the metal cage (this was at the boarding gate) so hopefully you'll be fine.
