*sigh* There's always someone cleverer, prettier, thinner..... :p

Only kidding BB (well, not about the 'cleverer' part :D) - some of that does ring a bell from today, but I think I was too busy saying 'oooh, pretty stars'. :o

I always think meeting people like that must be very interesting. I'm sure Ryan would have a question or 20 for them. My Dad studied physics at university, and I've always found it quite interesting, but I had a real phobia about a lot of the experiments we did in science lessons at school so I dropped them as soon as I could. Never liked biology but I think chemistry and physics are fascinating.

Ooops, inner nerd has escaped.....quick, help me catch it.... :rotfl:

Edit - just read that back and it sounds like I was saying BB is cleverer than me but not prettier or thinner!! Oh dear god, that's not what I meant at all, sorry!! :o

    Cooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool BB

*Bunny wishes she actually retained some of the information when she took astronomy at Uni*
    That's all I know about neutron stars:o
Most universities run this type of thing for free to [STRIKE]brainwash[/STRIKE] encourage youngsters into science
    Like astronomy open evenings http://www.ast.cam.ac.uk/public/
or science week http://www.cambridgescience.org/index.php in recent years in blatent cheap trick much has involved Dr Who

Or will send students to schools / websites where you can download experiments for [STRIKE]destroying your house [/STRIKE]fun

Science is desperate it's usually free... "public understanding" is a good phrase

I want you to know that I'm nodding in an intelligent manner.

But about the only stuff I could cope with was "Things" and if you'd have mentioned "stuff" too I would have understood more. :o

I saw the stars from a clearing in the Amazon rainforest once. I felt I could touch them. Amazing thngs really.

MAny people are too intimidated by weird dysfunctional academics to even think about phoning up their local unis science department or switchboard.... universities have to put this stuff on to get funding and justify their role in society....

Glad I'm not on the receiving end of this one:

*makes mental note not to allow Ryan anywhere near the 'destroying your house' sites*

You know, he once did this experiment where he put vinegar and baking soda in an empty film canister - I thought he was doing it outside but noooooo.......suddenly I hear a bang and my living room is covered in froth!

There are some really good resources there BB, thanks, especially the 'Ask an Astronomer' one - I will have a look through them all tomorrow when I'm not quite so tired. :o

Oh, there was some 'stuff' about black holes and how 'stuff' can't escape their pull (even light.....how weird is that?? But I guess that's why they are called black holes? :rotfl:).....is that the sort of stuff you mean? :D

Having always lived in the town/city, i was gob smacked the first time i saw a real non light polluted night sky at the back of my village.... amazing and i bet it would be only half as clear as some remote places....

you just don't see the sky the same in the city... i could sit on our bench at bottom of the garden and star gaze for hours... even more so if i knew what was what...

Orion and the plough that's about my limit....
I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....

Aargh! I missed the start of the astronomy thread! Rats! I've been a space science fan for years and years and years. I went to the Leicester Centre before it was open and took part in a day's simulation of a moon mission, complete with getting the lander onto the surface..... stayed with a friend who worked at the Kennedy Space Centre to watch a night-time space shuttle launch (STS84) .... went to Toronto for a Mars Society conference..... I don't really fit in, cos I'm rubbish at science, but I love it. I wish I was still flush, I'd still be doing stuff like that.... :(

  • Sounds like you had a fab day Snaggles :) all this intellectual stuff is a bit much for me to read this early in the morning so I'm doing the old 'smiling and nodding' :D
