I can, however, tell you all about Pulsars, which *I think* can form when REALLY BIG (the technical term ;)) stars collapse and are so dense that a tennis ball sized piece would apparently weigh more than planet earth!

    See, I was listening! :D:p

Aww, bless Joe, he's such a smart boy! :T

And Len, yes, I do really love watching the sky. My Dad used to point out all the constellations to me as a kid, and I still look for them now. :o

Well, Ryan is in bed - he would know the proper names but I'm a bit blonde when it comes to all that sort of stuff. My interest in space is more along the lines of 'oooh, pretty stars'.

They are neutron stars, because they are so dense the magnetic fields get distorted in like a doughnut so radiation kind of can only escape and gets beamed out at the poles in two cones, they rotate really regularly and it's when this beam hits the earth (like a lighthouse) we see a pulse - so we see blip-blip-blip really regularly... at first it was thought it might be someone out there so they were initially nicknamed LGM (little green men)... a bloke called Anthony Hewish was in charge of the project that found them and lots of people thought his student Jocelyn Bell-Burnell should have got a Nobel prize for actually spotting the signal (I've met both of them - separately - he's a very old gentlemen (80s?) but still working) - she's now a professor, one of perhaps three (?) in Physics in the UK at the OU... They once destroyed a planet in Dr Who by accreting it onto a Neutron star.
