My Dog needs a double op, hopefully next month & I imagine i'll be told to keep her from jumping onto the bed & chairs etc (But will know more on Tuesday at the consultation). She's not crate trained that I know of (She hasn't got much history as she was a stray) & i'm wondering if I should maybe buy one now & start to get her used to it, or to not bother?
If I buy one & she won't take to it, it's a waste of £ & the op could be expensive, is there anywhere to borrow them? She's a Medium sized Dog, 12.40kg in weight. Should I just not bother at all with a crate & try somehow to stop her jumping onto the bed & chair? I want to be as prepared as I can be before the surgery & will of course ask the Vet on Tuesday also.
I'm not really wanting to buy one new, because i'm not even sure she'll like it, she's an adult Dog aged 5, so might never have seen one & refuse to use it. I might not have time to train her to use it, I expect the op to be done mid March but will get the date on Tuesday.
Does anyone have any ideas for stopping them jumping onto things? I assume & hope she'll be given pain relief & if not i'll be asking for some for her, so she may not know it hurts to jump onto things IYSWIM?0 -
some local pet shops will hire them out
I think we hired one for £5 or £10 for a week once as ours was too big for where we were going.
Kira used to jump up on furniture but when we got newe sofa's we started a week before they arrived with the "off" and stopping her jumping up. If left alone in the room however she'll still jump up the naughty minxOne way round it could be to put things like chairs on the sofa's to stop her... or allow her ONE chair and make it easy for her to access it somehow...
She'll have pain relief for the first few days yes - after that they prefer it if the dogs don't get it as it can as you say make them forget that it hurts to jump up on stuff...
If you lived closer I'd have said borrow mine but it's not "just round the corner"
You could also try putting something in front of the sofa's etc like large pieces of cardboard maybe?DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Luckily she does just have one chair as I don't have a sofa, the other chair is the Cats (I don't seem to get one) & the Cat won't give it up! Maybe I could train the Cat to guard both? lol it's the one chair & the bed, the bed she's not as bad as sometimes the Cat is on it & when I got her I didn't want her boinging up on there & scaring the Cat so tho she is allowed on now the rule is she asks, never just assumes. Then I can be sure if the Cat is there or wanting to be. The chair I could stuck something on, never thought of that! I don't think there's much else she can get excited over, I close the curtains if any Dogs are in the park as it's literally like our garden it's so close.
I'll call the pet shops to see if they hire out & start getting her to not jump up, I find her hard to refuse tho! I guess whether she tries also depends how extensive this op is & if the Cancer (If it is Cancer) has spread or anything we can't tell by just looking & feeling. Maybe she'll feel too bad to want to try?
All good points tho tys, can't believe I never thought to stick something on her chair!0 -
I dont know, I have never used a crate - I just did 'go to your bed' if she looked like jumping on anything!!0

lmao she does know the word bed, I was quite suprised the first time I used it talking to myself & she responded. Normally she goes right away too. However, I think she's cleverer than me (Not hard!) cause since she's shared MY bed at night, bed now means MY bed too (When I say bed she might go to mine, not necessarily hers!) She seems to know it's where she sleeps lol. At least she'll wait to be allowed on the bed.
I guess at night I can lift her onto my bed as she won't move till morning & in the day i'll have her bed on the floor & the chair with stuff on & watch her! Hoping to have it done on a Thursday so I can be in until the Wednesday after as I don't do anything the rest of the week only those days.0 -

You dont really need a crate. Most dogs know whether they can jump or not and will do when ready.
If she does try to jump and isnt managing it....jsut tell her to "go to your bed"....which is ok if her bed isnt the sofa! lol0 -
Hello wonderful people!
I'm needing a crate for my new acquisition, if all goes well, will be bringing him back on Sunday. I have a Pets at Home near me and planned to go out Saturday for bits and bobs.
I've just been on their site - and I am confused by the crates, not having used them before. No idea of price or style that I should be going for. All I know is that the young fella is used to one 24x18 - and he is not coming with a crate.
Help and advice please guys - thank you in advance!Genie
