As big a one as you possibly can get. If a 48 is recommended - get the next size up. If you are successful with the crate training you will use the crate all its adult life. Lost of people keep the crate up and their dogs always use them as bed and a safe haven. If you dont get the use from it - Ebay - they are snapped up

But also bear in mind the size of space it has to fit into and are you going to use it in the car.

I tend to agree with Suki but just think twice about it ie get your tape measure out and figure out which will fit.

The only other thing are you going to continue using it as an adult? If not sure why not see if you can pick up a smaller one on EBay or borrow one for a couple of months for use as a pup and decide later on whether you want to splash out on a big one.

    Edit:-

For example although he doesn't use it much now (feeding and perhaps a couple of hours a week at most) our Springer is in a 30" crate which according to the link is too small but still takes up a lot of space.

I had to get a separate crate for the car - one that was angled to fit the hatchback. Actually truth told we also bought a bigger car to fit a crate:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    I knew it...lol :rotfl: :rotfl:

A 54" crate will be bloody enormous that is why I'm just suggesting if OP can beg or borrow one for the first few months it will give then time to decide whether a crate full time will work in their home/ car etc.

Some people only want it until the pup is house trained and gone through the chewing stage. As others have said some people use them for the life of the dog. Have you decided what you will do?

I agree with looking on ebay - once you decide you don't want this anymore you cannot wait to get rid of it!

  • Hi

We had to upgrade our crate for a bigger one and after lots of searching for a good one on ebay we found a huge 42" crate in as new condition for 15.00 a little while ago so it might be worth looking on there.

Good luck with your puppy ours is great fun and now fast asleep after digging holes in the snow.

  • I bought a new 36" one from ebay which ended up being something like £30 with postage. However, it seemed a bit 'flimsy' and my lab managed to escape from it! I've heard stories of others who have the cheaper crates have had escapees.

I ended up spending £100 in PAH for a 42" one, it's way chunkier. However, I know my pup will be in it until she's at least 18 months old so it's more of an investment and she's much happier in that one than she was the other one.

As for vet bed, ebay is the best place, you can buy loads of it and wash it against each one.
