I just want to check with others before I try taking this back.

I brought a large dog cage (the size for a boxer etc size dog) for my staff. last month from pets at home, I asked the woman in the store how long it was guaranteed for and she said a year.
One month on and he's killed it. The plastic tray in the base lasted about 2 weeks before he snapped it in half.
Now he's chewed the metal bars at the bottom of the door so badly that the weld keeping it together has broken!!

Surely a metal cage made for a large dog should be stronger than that and last longer??

Will I be able to take it back??

    How old is the Staff?

How long have you had the Staff?

Did you introduce the Staff to the cage quietly or did you just get it in, and then go out your self?
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Some very useful questions there and cage training is not a quick fix - it does sound as if your dog is less than happy in the cage.

However, I would try taking it back, it may well be that its 'not fit for purpose'
  • i wouldnt have thought you could take it back. You would probably have been better off getting one with a metal base as well.We bought two for our labs, but they prefer to share the same one.As ariba 10 said, its best to introduce them gradually. We put ours in the living room, keeping the cage door open so they could wander in and out. Some days they used to just go in there by themselves with the door open. When i moved it outside
they now go in when i tell them to.
It was one of the best things i ever bought.

The guarantee will be for manufacturing defects. Was there any?

Think you will have to rely on goodwill from shop.

Max is 5 years old and I've had him since he was 11 months.
We have never had any problems with him (except for his dislike of other dogs) until we lost Winston our smooth collie (yes both dogs got on fine) at the end of February.
Max has obviously been very upset and started to damage the door and door frame of our kitchen when ever we go out. As I live in housing association house I obviously need to keep the property in good order and can't have him destroying the house!
I thought the safest option would be to get a cage.
He was fine for the first couple of weeks, he went in it fine when we were in and if we went out. We gave him lots of praise and treats, he was even taking treats in there to eat!!
He is always fine when he has to stay at the vets and they never have a problem with him, he is epileptic so has had to stay there quite a few times. He also got run over in 2007 and had to spend a long time in then and the week before Christmas 2008 he was attacked by my neighbours two staff's and was terribly injured and had to stay in then.

I don't know what else to do but carry on using a cage
The only advise I keep getting is to get another dog to keep him company

About the only thing I can think of is for you to give him a Kong filled with treats when you put him in his cage. Most dogs don't try and break out and he may not have been wanting to escape but chewed up the plastic base and then got carried away.

As for this cage, try taking it back and see what they say - I am not sure if you can buy extra strong cages but they might be heavy.

i tried a cage for my 9 week old pup, he hated it, i left it open 4 him to go in on his own, no joy, tried putting treats inside and he hates it, put him in and jumps out. put him in and shut the door and he cried for hrs, tried this 2 nights. i guess some dogs just do not like them.. so when im out he has the kitchen and hallway, with the front room door shut and stairs stairgated.
