You just record how many litres you've used and pay them duty at 22p a litre. If you can get oil for free then even a £1000 conversion would pay for itself in 10,000-20,000 miles depending on your car.

This is another project that I'd been planning to see if I could do on the cheap:).

yep, i know there is a form you can get from custom & excise people. My other question is - how would they know how many litres of chip oil you have actually used? If you car runs on both diesel and chip oil, who is to say that you don't run your car 50/50 (chip oil/diesel) rather than 90/10 (chip oil/diesel)?

They don't know- it relies on you being honest. Presumably if they suspect you are cheating they can come and check up on you- if you claim to be only using 2 litres a week and yet when they turn up you've got three oil powered cars and a whole garage full of oil filtering equiptment they'll not be happy;).

;) gotcha! Was just wondering if there was some counter-type thingy on the oil unit in the car that counts the gallons. Appears not...

Watched the latest programme. A definite improvement on the first one.

I think having all the family sleeping downstairs with the wood-burner on all night was a bit OTT though. Surely they don't need to have heating on all night anyway? Their house can't be that cold!

Nice to see a bit more useful information in this episode though.

I think they just switched the gas off for one night to punish them didn't they?

I thought it was quite good- I liked the idea of using the cooking oil for bird food so it doesn't go down the sink, although we don't really use very much oil so not much to throw away.

Interesting programme. Can't believe what blinkered lives some people live! And those microwave burgers YEUK. Great when in true old style fashion she did a big cook and put loads of meals in the freezer.

I really like this programme and the presenter. I thought tonights family made a good fist of getting on with it particularly with the home cooking and disposable nappies. I wish they had also plugged terry squares which would have solved the long drying times problem. To be honest though a monkey could have walked in there and saved them bucket loads of cash, I would like to see her do an MSE Ol'Stylers house and to see if she measures up with a tougher nut to crack.

You can get one of those Fat Traps that they were using HERE for free, if you are an Anglia Water customer, or £1 if not. :)
