  • No major need to wash out or take labels from cans but more aesthetic and hygenic for you and handlers to do so. Sounds obvious but I've cut myself wasking out cans too so use the brush thing rather than sponge thing

I can't believe how every council in the country seems to have a different policy and system for recycling.

Not just what they collect from people's homes but also what they class as different things, for example where my parents live they include envelopes and telephone directories in 'paper' whereas here they don't  .

We now live in a flat and have no recycling collected at all (only had paper collected in our old (terraced) house). However we've put a plastic box in our very small kitchen and we're putting plastic bottles, cans and glass in that and then when it's full (took it to the banks while we were out yesterday so took 3 weeks to fill up) taking it to tescos etc, and papers in the spare room in a paper habitat bag and we took that too.

Only place you can take cardboard is at the tip which is a nightmare to get to so we're having to stockpile that somewhere as I'm not going to the tip very often.

Main thing which is annoying me is the loss of my compost bin (we had one in our back yard at our old place as we had pots with flowers etc in it) hate to have to put vegetable peelings etc in the bin but there's nothing I can do really at the moment :(

  • There is an interview with Penney Poyzer here:

Very interesting. It's 'part one' with parts 2 and 3 from PP to follow apparently....

I also got the NWLH book from bookpeople for £3.99 (thanks to whoever posted that) - only read a bit but it looks good so far.

By the way the street opposite mine all got little red recycling boxes this morning!! Fingers crossed that our street will be next. :) Maybe Edinburgh council listened to my email after all. :)

P.S. Does anyone in Edinburgh know if these are for glass or paper or both (it's the red box with a silver rain cover, says reduce, re-use, recycle on the side when I had a peek)
