Because I hardly ever shop at Tesco anymore (and it's where the recycling bins are) I have a huge backlog of newspapers and glass. I don't have a car so would have to make (lots) of trips on foot carrying heavy bags. If only Edinburgh council would get sorted and have street collection bins in my area. I have written to them but they take about 2 months to reply to a letter!! (They kept sending me someone elses council tax bill and took 2 months to reply to my letter saying that I had already paid).

I really don't want to throw all this paper and glass out with the rubbish but will have no choice soon, due to lack of space! :(

If the glass is jars, you could use them for jam or advertise them as jam jars free to the collector. If bottles, maybe someone who makes their own wine might be glad of them for free.I use newspapers to make pots for planting my seeds in and also put it in the compost bin.We used to have some laid under the carpet as it makes good underlay. You can use it to bulk out parcels if you screw it up into balls and as fire lighting paper.
  • Well, I put the newspapers on freecycle, who knows maybe someone has a use for them!? The bottles are mostly wine bottles :):) (so no good for jam) I like a glass of wine with my dinner of a night and it's amazing how quickly the bottles stack up!! (About 1 bottle every 3 days and I have about 3 months worth [30])

Green Cone - the greencone thingy that was on NWLH - if you enter your postcode on this site you can see if your local council is subsiding them (only 10% off but it helps..) http://www.greencone.com/councils/index.asp

By the way, has the prog ended? (it's not listed on Radio Times for this week (BBC Scotland)

Today the family only saved £180 in one week!
Course that didnt include the cost of the new spa cover or the wood burning stove or the Flat screen monitor they now have.
Im a bit confused about the wood burning stove however,as I thought that would count as fossil fuel useage??? Possibly it uses far less fossil fuel than the electric heater it replaced.

I can't believe that family left the spa bath on all the time  . And have you ever heard something as crazy as using a hairdryer to warm the room up? This programme would be more useful (although possibly less controversial) if the families selected weren't so stupid! I know it is really supposed tobe entertainment, but any Old Styler could have saved that family 50% at least on their electricity bill.

Wood isn't a fossil fuel. It's actually a renewable source - as long as the people responsible for chopping down the tree plant a new one in its place.

    Many companies do this now.

    Sadly, not all.

There are actually grants available but only for the wood pellet stoves etc, not log burning stoves. Here's a link:
    http://www.clear-skies.org/households/GrantsAndTechnologies.aspx?intTechnologyID=5
You can also follow links from the page for info on solar, hydro and wind too aswell as wood fuelled boilers (again only available for the wood pellets).

There's a bit more info on the idea of biomass including wood on this page from the Energy Saving Trust:

I'd love a wood burning stove to heat my studio flat, I bet it would be better than my gas one that pretends to be a coal burning fire!
