Sainsburys Online shopping DOWN!

My wife was waiting in for a shop from Sainsburys today and 5 minutes outside the timeslot she gets a phone call. Apparently the whole online shopping system is down (since last night) and no-one will be getting their shopping today (apparently all shopping has been lost!). My wife, who was depending on the shop and now has to somehow get out shopping (which will not be easy for her) was offered a £10 voucher. Surely this is a joke. Should she not receive and expect more!

Beware if you are waiting for a shop from Sainsburys!!

  • Our phone call came 10 minutes after the delivery window had closed. I think they have a lot of people to contact!

Very poor organisation. They should have a system for backing up these orders in such a situation. Poor IT strategy!

What more do you want. They have not delivered in the time scale so have offered £10.

Why does everyone want compensation for everything. Yes it may be a pain going to the shop. I wonder what everyone use to do before interenet shopping

As you have no idea what sort of IT system they run you will have no idea of what they do. It is not practical do backups every 5 mins as it can slow systems down. if they back up once or twice a day they may well still loose orders between the two backs up times if there is a failure. You can have all sorts of backup plans in case X Y Z happens but often A B C Happens and they have no plan for it.

This isn't true any more, if you use a file replication system the files are constantly being backed up. So there's no need to do a backup. Our systems are designed to fail safe; simple duplication of the servers, file replication and automatic failover should a service fail. On 2 different sites, with 2 different BT lines, with a BT failover service too.

So people are quite right to be upset - there's no excuse now for Sainbury's not to operate a similar system!

    No.

If people ordered stuff for today how would Sainsbury know the customer still wanted the same items tomorrow or a later day?

If you place an order it is for the items you select to be delivered on the day you select – Sainsbury failed to deliver the selected items on the selected day so give a £10 voucher – that’s the end of the transaction.

Now you can replace your order for the items you want – and get the lot £10 cheaper :D

I wouldn't have minded the free £10 voucher. Been on the news, their website is down for the rest of today.

Totally incorrect . They always offer £10 compensation if they are late with your delivery. This is totaly different. This is delivery CANCELLED not just LATE . This is 20,000 customers who have been left with no food. This is absolutely outrageous. They say the website crashed overnight and LOST 20,000 customer orders. If they lost them, then how comes they know who they are and are phoning them to let people know they will not be getting a delivery. I got a 1571 message to inform me, and that was 15 mins inside the delivery time. I've taken time off work to wait in for this, also essential baby food and items and medication had been ordered. This is not just a case of them messing up slightly, this is real BIG time, and I bet their shares lose 10% before the day is out.

I'm going to phone back and demand they pay for a taxi to and from my nearest store which is 4 miles away.

I need these items today. Yes, I could just go to Morrisons in my local town, but then I feel sainsburys will have got away with it. If I never shopped there again, they would have even got away with not giving out the £10 comp they are offering.

edit : ps , also it is the wifes birthday today, and there were items for a party and for guests and stuff. Now we have to run round like an idiot.

Dont worry. There is no way in hell they are going to have the time to issue 20,000 different codes for the e-vouchers. I'm sure a few will pop up online sooner or later.

If it was prescription medication that means someone would die then yes I would be very annoyed and expect extra help. But it is up to me as user of that medication to make sure I have enough in to last and order before I run out. And the same with food be it for adults or baby.

There shares have dropped 11p which is nothing over a day.

I think you know what the answer is going to be to that one. And you ain't going to like it.

Wish you well in chasing compensation.

And personally I would never leave it until the very last minute to get the food and wine for a party. I would have sorted that out weeks ago and would be stored in my freezer and larder. But each to there own.

Yeah we all know what they should have but what they choose to have is up to them.

But as don't know what caused it and why it happened there ain't a lot of point talking about it.

Ok be upset but no one has died because of it, so think people need to keep some sort of proportion here.
