Do you have MR16 or GU10 lamps? I am trying to reduce the lighting portion of my energy bill (estimate is half!), but am struggling to find suitable replacements for the eight 50W MR16s in my living area without losing light - I have a north-facing flat. The lamps I have found (Osram/ Philips) will all take eight months for me to break even on cost.
If I have more than 3 working bulbs in at a time, it starts to blow them after as little as 2 days - and I think the longest I've managed to keep all 7 running is about 6 days. In 202 I had the builders send their electrician back twice, who swore there was nothing wrong with the wiring etc. When I phoned again early in 2003 they refused to send him back, as he's given the house a 'clean bill of health'. They actually accused me of using 'sub standard' bulbs -- until I pointed out that I'd tried various makes from several different sources over the 10 months or so we'd been in the house).
So I normally only run on 2 or 3 bulbs.
However, I'm looking at registering to become a child minder later this year -- and am a little nervous that the room not being "fully lit" may get flagged on my inspections.
The only ones I've found as R80's are very expensive to buy in person, and I don't fancy using mail order for them.
I did, however, manage to get 11 Watt R63's at a better price (£5 each in Mr T, but were on a BOGOF until last Sunday). The fittings are identical, but the bulbs are slightly smaller (not as wide).
I've been informed by a few people that recessed spots are very prone to overheat and blow (due to the fact there's often some sort of insulation between the kitchen ceiling and upstairs floor in modern house), so the fact I now have clearance around the bulbs means the air can circulate -- and I've hopefully extended the life of the bulbs
I've no idea what I'm looking at in terms of payback though -- have never calculated that for bulbs, as I just see them as good for the environment (plus they'll soon be all we can get!)Cheryl0 -
I'm surprised I'm still on an A and 15 / 54. There's quite a jump in my readings
this week as it is the first full week I've been home since christmas hols.
Planning to switch off heating on 31st of March and hopefully keep the bills
down for the next quarter. 71 days to go or 10 weeks. Coming up to 26 weeks on imeasure
so should have a reasonable idea of annual consumption and savings.
You have been taking readings for 25 weeks
Since you started measuring your total household -
Energy use is 2,743 kWh (Gas: 2,160kWh | Electricity: 583kWh)
Carbon emissions are 750 Kg CO2 (Gas: 445 Kg CO2 | Electricity: 305 Kg CO2)
Last week you spent:
* £6.58 on gas
* £3.24 on electricity
Total you have spent on energy since starting imeasure (25 weeks ago):
* £75.61 on gas
* £69.96 on electricity
All users/All housetypes 229 households.

I'm an A too, I started off as a B. We've not done too bad this week. I know the difference from the weeks were I've used 48Kwh elec is now down to how much the TV is on.
Last week you spent:- £4.27 on gas - 122 kWh
- £6.36 on electricity 53 kWh
- £51.18 on gas
- £86.04 on electricity

I'm a B - and ranked 35/48 in the moneysaving carbon club - must be due to my high usage figures:
Last week I spent:
£1.54 on gas (44kwh)
£3.00 on electricity (25kwh)
Carbon emission per person (and household as I live alone) 22kg - against the average per person of 66kg.0 -

OK officially very very confused. I used more gas and electric this week than last week. Last week i was an E and this week I am a D, and both times 9/48 in the carbon club. This week's actually feels right but last weeks was deffo wrong and as it was my probably only chance to get above a D this winter I'm still a bit cross about it!
Anyway I've used 637 kwh of gas and 65 kwh of electric in the last week. I didn't manage to sustain the totally frozen thing from the week before, it was just too miserable. I've just also done a calculation of the amount of gas I used last year to this year from Sept to Dec inclusive and it's down 15%. Although I kind of thought it should be down more considering how hard I'm trying :rolleyes: still deffo an improvement.
And please can someone tell me how to paste the actual results in here, every time I try it looks like a dog's dinner
Congrats too those of you on As and Bs I'm really impressed!0 -
There are two ways of posting the result
One is to copy and paste them, and then use fullstops to align the columns (I used to change the full stops to white so they didn't show)
The other (as I did last week) is to use some screen capture software. I use something called King Kong, and all I do is highlight the section of the screen I want and save it out to an image file. I then uploaded it to Photobucket and inserted it into this thread by using theicon

Good morning meter-watchers
This week I am showing as a D rating and 15/48 in the carbon club. Again, costs are way above what I actually pay because of the way i-measure is set to run and my having 3 rates on meter.
Results in Detail
You have been taking readings for 6 weeks
Since you started measuring your total household -
Energy use is 2,259 kWh (Gas: 0kWh | Electricity: 2,259kWh)

The actual amount I have spent since getting the keys to this house 73 days ago is £275.01 so my average, to date, is £26.37 per week on electricity (and an average £11.20 per week feeding the fire! :rolleyes: )
Well done to everyone managing to keep within their minimums.
CW, don't forget to factor in extra heating costs for running your nursery/childminding business if rooms need to be maintained at 21C or whatever and hot water available at all times. :eek: I'd love to give that a go (the room temps, not the childminding) just to find out how much it cost but daren't even try it. :rotfl:I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

In the last 4 hours, I've dropped from 35/48 in the carbon club, to 46/48 - that's with a carbon output of 22kg against the average of 61kg per person (changed from 66kg 4 hours ago), £1.54 on gas (44kwh), and £3.00 on electricity (25kwh) - pretty low figures.
The only accurate thing I can see about imeasure is its recording of gas and electricity usage - figures we supply as subscribers.
Just refreshed the imeasure screen, and find I'm now 31/48 - makes little sense.0
