  • Hi and Welcome ticking over.

Re health - I've been curled up on the sofa with a duvet and reading a book on food and global warming !? didn't realise it had dropped to 14C. Heating is now on.
  • Thanks setmefree2, although it's not quite as great as it first looks seeing as they hiked it up double that amount in April  I thought at the time that was far too much, but the price rises were just starting and I'd rather be quids in than left with a huge bill.

Had heating on in hall and living room for 3 hours yesterday, the diference in daily use appears very small. (we have to have hall radiator on low as the main thermostsat is there so otherwise the system goes mad trying to bring the temp up iyswim)

It's even colder here today, currently 8degrees in the hall and 11 in the living room, so might have to put the heating on even earlier today. Got some fleece gloves for £1 in MrT on saturday, they're really warm but thin enough to be able to wear when typing!!!!! So what with them and extra jumper, holding out for a bit longer.

    we are finished. :(

it was so cold here last night that we have decided to allow the CH to come on if it needs to tonight if it drops to 10 degrees. hopefully it wont. on the bright side we have the cavity wall insulation being refilled becuase when they checked it they thought it looked a little light. for me i hope it was alot light and when they fix it it will make a big difference. and dropped from A rating to B this week :(:(

Well done AFFL! Nice little windfall for you and excellent compensation for not winning the i-measure comp. :)

I went and posted the fuel poverty findings into wrong thread, oops! After reading them, I gave up trying to economise on the heating for the sake of the carbon footprint because the following are for an average standard of heating, if anyone has an illness or is incapacitated etc, according to health associated sites, many recommend 24C. If I could get any of my rooms to reach 18C, I'd be happy. Will let you all know what it takes to do it. Meanwhile, the hall is still 10C and the warmest room is 15C today. We are now using around 60 units over a period of 24 hours.

    Here's what I found:

    FUEL POVERTY:

"The definition of fuel poverty is when a household needs to spend more than 10% of their household income on all domestic fuel use including appliances to heat their home to an adequate level of warmth."

    What does 'adequate warmth' mean?

"Adequate warmth is generally defined to be 21°C in the main living room and 18°C in other occupied rooms during daytime hours, with lower temperatures at night, following the recommendations of the World Health Organization."
I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

Frugal living challenge - living on little in 2025 while frugalling towards retirement.
  • Thanks for that nyk.

I don't think I would be able to get the heating up to 21 C. The temperature had dropped to 12.5C by the time I'd realised how cold it was. I put the heating on and the highest I could get it to was 17.5C in the living room.
  • Well my weather station thingy arrived yesterday morning and it's been sat in the bathroom since then ..... now this is a room with a wall heater which doesn't get switched on so it's about as warm as the fridge and according to the thermometer its just under 20c in there:eek: No way can that be right.... It's now in the front room and if I can find the mini-screwdrivers it'll be in pieces tonight so I can check that the little arrows are not stuck... and if that fails then I've got a spare clock and the hunt will be back on for another thermometer:o

Apologies for posting the link to the weather station, the write up and the price did seem to make it a good deal but I think I should have been a little more wary.... Sorry.

These 2 are better (I think).....this one is on the Magic Freebies UK site
If anyone lives near or will be close to a B+Q between Friday 31st Oct and Sunday 2nd Nov you can take an ordinary lightbulb into the store and exchange it for 2 energy saving ones (limited to 1 swap per household)

    http://www.theretailbulletin.com/news/bq_and_british_gas_launch_first_nationwide_light_bulb_amnesty_29-10-08/
The light bulb amnesty will run in B&Q stores from Friday 31 October until Sunday 2 November. B&Q has 589,700 energy saving light bulbs to exchange for traditional bulbs (offer limited to two free energy saving light bulbs per household). The bulbs that are traded in will be recycled by the store.

And ipoints sent this one to my inbox, it's an offer for £5 off the price of the OWL electricity monitor, if you put the coupon number M1008G in on the basket page then you only pay £29.95 and there's no p+p to pay.

Just been for a look at the Owl monitor, as I've seen them mentioned in a couple of articles recently and thought they'd be horribly expensive.

First time I've managed to find installation instructions as well -- so having found out it wouldn't break the bank, I've now discovered there's no way I can fit one :(

    It says :-

Locate your electricity meter and clip the sensor to the live incoming mains cable, between the meter and fusebox.

but my meter and fusebox are back-to-back on an external wall, and there's no exposed wiring between them :(:(:(
