I know one of the reasons of this thread is to try and use as less heat as possible, which I have been trying to do. BUT, I think my time of shivering whilst watching Eastenders is over lol.

Over the last 6 weeks i've had 3 cases of the sniffles, which I don't usally have in a year, never mind 6 weeks! From now on, i'm going to switch my heating up a notch. Not the CH as such, but the gas fire on a little higher. Sorry, but my health comes first.

God knows what my weekly readings are going to be from now on...

Health comes first - no point in shivering:D

Disgusting as it may sound, the electricity useage here has now reached about 40 kwu per day. I really haven't got a clue how you all do it and there's not a thing I can do to solve this problem (apart from move house, which we are doing in a fortnight). Tenancy agreements state that tenants MUST air and heat a property to a level that prevents damage. I can't switch heaters off and on at random, as the old storage heaters here can take up to 2 days to heat and, even with what we already have switched on (now up to 5 heaters over 3 floors) you can still see your breath in the hall, kitchen and top floor. We are north facing and get no sunlight in any of the actual rooms bar a tiny bit in the kitchen around mid-day. All of these heaters have cooled down by about 6pm and don't heat up again until cheap rate kicks in at 11pm. I can't wait to move!

Edited in - I should mention the fact that last winter, when we first moved in here, the first few days of 'landlord's settings' amounted to an average of 84 units PER DAY, so we are still less than half what the owners were when they stayed here. :D
I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

  • It seems it is too low to give a reading. What's the power rating of the digibox or the minimum wattage you can record on the monitor?
  • Hi, have i worked this out correctly
I am trying to find out how many kwh I use per unit. so from my i-measure data, this is what I have come up with:
Anyhow is my Gas workings out correct??

Since you started measuring your total household -
Energy use is 2,219 kWh (Gas: 1,883kWh | Electricity: 336kWh)
Actual UNITS I have used is 170,
    1,883kWh / 170 Units = 11.07 Kwh per unit.
    55.8kWh a day / 4.85 units a day

my electric is measured as straight kWh and averaging 9.6 kWh a day.

My f/view box registers OK, it's an alarm clock that doesn't. The back of the clock says 220-240V, 50Hz

Your gas looks fine if you're on a METRIC meter. There may be a clue on your meter, otherwise check an old bill to see if your kWh is closer to 10x your units (metric) or 30x (imperial) -- actual figures will be 11 times or 30-something times, but 10 and 30 is close enough to check your meter type :)

ETA: What do you have running on your gas? We have hob, immersion heater (20-30 mins a day) and (minimal) central heating, and are averaging 7kWh/day for our gas over the last 4 weeks -- for 3 people in a modern (well insulated) 4 bed detached. One week was closer to 10 kWh/day because I forced the heating on as the house was starting to feel slightly damp.

Whether its digital or mechanical I don't think you can expect much of a reading. tbh. A kitchen clock probably use more and they easily run on a couple of AA or AAA batteries for couple of years.

The power is probably way below a watt.:)

Thanks - nice to know it's almost certainly not me doing something wrong setting up the monitor :)

(the monitor is still a bit of a novelty toy to me :rolleyes2 )

Recently moved, single glazing, yet to have confirmation over what insulation the house has had. Old back boiler, old CH system, gas cooker (new one is due to be installed by council, anytime from January next year onwards. so could be 5 years down the line)

Ahhhhh! One of those houses :rolleyes2

The council house my DD is in has double glazing -- but she still gets what feels like gale force winds through it !! She's reported it, they've been and checked it, and they claim there's no problem !!! No idea what other insulation she has either though it doesn't feel like much, but they've recently replacing the tiles on all the roofs and changed all the front doors on her estate (and other estates around us) so I would hope they invested in insulation before spending on things like that
