Hmmm, I will get hubby to check the thermostat - thank you for the idea and I'll check the timer too, although I think that's ok.
I just can't put it down to anything else. This week the reading is still up and it's a real mystery.

We're lucky with heating in that we have a woodburner, so this doesn't hike our energy usage. It has an electric pump, but that uses next to nothing.

I'm going to check the thermostat right now infact, because this 'mystery' is really annoying me (and costing me!)

Well done everyone - you're all doing really well.
  • Okay so my first full week of energy saving has passed. And I'm pleased with the results. In the last week we've used 112kwh gas (16 per day) and 59kwh electric (8.5 per day). The gas use is slightly up admittedly, it's been b***y cold here in Belfast and we've had the heat on for half an hour or so every night, which has also helped with drying washing since it has also been raining constantly. But the electric use has gone down - I have some rudimentary records from before and our lowest electric use was 9.5 kwh per day and the more normal read would be about 11kwh per day at this time of year. I reckon I've achieved this by turning off all the standbys that are normally left on ... beyond this I've done everything much as normal. So this is a saving of around 17.5 kwh/£2.22 per week!!

Still have to tackle the fridge issue though....

Coming back with this week's totals.
electric 57kwh over week (8.1 per day)
Gas 101kwh over week (14.4 per day)

I'm pleased we've reduced the gas use a little although again it has been really really cold here so heat has been on at night for a little bit. And electric down a little bit as well.

Confession time! It got so cold here last night that I had to stick the electric underblanket on for 5 minutes before climbing into bed! It didn't seem to make any difference to the overnight meter reading, though. We've no other 'instant' heat available here, so I'm thinking this could be the way to go during winter... basic heating to avoid dampness and early nights with electric blankets on the beds. :rotfl:
DS's room heats up no problem because he's in the smallest room in the house, meaning that his TV and games consoles practically fill the room. Has anyone any idea the wattage on 42" flat screen TV? (He saved up and bought it for himself.) These radiate a heck of an amount of heat! Must investigate now.

According to http://www.sust-it.net between 18p-40p for six hours use. Lower for LCD and higher for plasma.

As for electric blankets - they don't cost very much at all to use, AFAIK.

  • Consumption this week is:

    Gas 3 units (oops)
    Electricity 27 units

    So gone up a bit.

Rank in carbon club 14/18:eek: currently a D rating. What a gas guzzler!:rotfl:

So I need to drop consumption to a quarter to get an 'A'.

Or more realistically share a flat with other people.

As the heating has been off (mostly) and the fridge freezer uses relatively little - about 5.6 units per week then 'shared' energy is quite low. Sharing the cost of heating in winter is certainly a case for shared living not to mention other bills.

Everything else, shower, kettle, washing machine and PC are single person costs. Except cooking which might get more efficient with more people.

Still my savings are very good this far.:)

I wonder if they will introduce other types of carbon calculator such as transport and waste.

I've put my readings into imeasure this morning and Gas is 63KWH for the week and Electric 32KWH. Rank currently 5/18, no Carbon rating yet not enough readings. TV hasn't been on as much this week so that has helped a lot

Aha finally figured out how to see carbon club results (the results tab is clearly too subtle for me :o ) Which makes me 9th. I was expecting to be nearly last so don't feel too bad about it.

I feel I have scored a significant victory in the ongoing battle with mr BG over standby. When I told him that our usage of electric was down by almost a third suddenly he got it. And he has started turning things off standby himself :)

And my sash window guy came back with a quote a bit under what I expected (£450 all in) so I am expecting him to do the window next Tuesday. Since it was cheaper than expected and DH is away at the time I'm debating asking him to do the draughty kitchen window as well. Maybe wait and see the results before I get too carried away.

Finally feel I'm getting somewhere. Haven't tackled the fridge yet though although I have really been stressing how manky underneath it is so I think I will have DHs buy in when I finally do go for it :)

Ooh, I'm 6/18 in the carbon club! Am holding on to the moment because it can't last. Still on 13-14 kwh for elec, am pleased that at least it's constant and not climbing.

Hi guys, I've just fed in my i-measure figures and am now ranked in the MoneySaving Carbon Club 13/19
My carbon grade is B (from last week's C), but I can only get results to show up against 'all households' as opposed to 'all electric'. Surely I can't be the only one here with electricity only? Have you guys all got gas or oil? I think we need more MoneySaving Carbon Club members :)
