November the first sounds like a good target - though I have put the heating on a couple of times. Poor shareholders:).
We usually get a first frost in mid to late September. Saying that the lowest temperature I've recorded in the house in winter was 11 Celsius.
Average temperature I've recorded in the past was about 16 to 17 Celsius for November / December.
They say a mild summer means there will be a mild winter so fingers crossed.0 -

I read on another thread that other MSEers are aimimg for 1st November to turn on their heating. This seems very ambitious:o....we'll see.:D
That might be me. We don't put ours on until 1st Nov and it goes off again on 31st March...earlier if the weather is ok......BUT.....we do live on the south coast and I'm Scottish born & bred so don't feel the cold quite so much. If it is a bit chilly we go for the extra layers of clothes or I'll have my blanket out when I'm watching TV.
And having seen that Eon have just put their prices up I'm going to use a lot more of the open fire and a lot less of anything that lines their pocket!

You setting a high hurdle. Wish I could tap direct into some of these local wind turbines.0 -
We're in the NE of England and heating never goes on before 1st october and we try and hold out as long as possible. We start of with just 20 mins half an hour a day then start building it up. Think I will aim for 1st November sounds good to me.0

Can't remember when I switched the heating on last year but I suspected I had it on most days. I'll keep going as long as I can. Perhaps setting a daily target might help but I'm certainly not going to risk burst pipes, dampness or pneumonia though. I might make it a bit further with a hot water bottle though.
Keeping more active and going for walks certainly makes a difference when it is slightly chilly. That said I've regressed a couple of times on the heating.
Since Monday, very early morning, I've used:
1 unit of gas
15 units of electricity
Should get a 4 week 'energy rating' on imeasure this coming Monday:j0 -
We're November - April for heaters on here as October is one of those months that you can almost expect a heatwave at the start and then snow by the end! But ours are storage heaters, so we can't do the 20 minutes per day thing as they are hard wired through the second meter. Last night I switched the water heater on and it used 6 units, as expected, so I'll see how long the tank of hot water lasts.

The less I spend, the more I can afford.

TBH I'm not sure we will make 1 November - I suspect end of September might be more realistic but I'm gonna try.:D
Is anyone noticing the effect of the darker evenings on their usage?

Yes, despite keeping an eye on the meter the leccy is just creeping up, ever so slightly, but it's still going in the wrong direction........so is the gas as I'm making a few more 'warming meals' instead of salady type things, again nothing momentus but still going the wrong way
Even more dismayed that last night we used 1.2kwh whilst sleeping (yesterday we only used 4.5kwh for the previous 24hrs)! Only the fridge/ freezer, 2 x DVD players (on so it shows time etc) an alarm clock radio, 2x cordless phones (if they are switched off they don't work) and the Orange livebox on. I suspect the livebox doesn't help but apparently it needs to stay on for updates.

Not doing to bad as main light that we have on is one lamp in the lounge whch has an energy saving bulb, but I have had to put the main light on in the dinning room so the dogs can see their dinner bowls when they eat. trying to keep the TV off as much as possible its quite often on just for background noise.0
