I think I'm going to give up on the Carbon Club ranking I've had 5 different rankings over the last two days varying from top to bottom end of the scale.

Well I'm sticking with it since I'm no. 3 :)

I think you're right SuiDreams, think there might be something a bit odd going on there. But I suspect it will sort itself out in the end ....

So long as you don't give up on the entire MoneySaving Carbon Club :) Just ignore the ranking until we find out what it's all about. The site's still in beta mode so there could be loads of changes still to come. They don't even take other fuels into consideration yet, so they've a long way to go. Just look at your carbon grade and try to keep it beneath a D then you'll know you are doing well :)

According to http://www.sust-it.net between 18p-40p for six hours use. Lower for LCD and higher for plasma.

As for electric blankets - they don't cost very much at all to use, AFAIK.

Electric blankets are cheap and efficient to use. I have a double which is rated at 150w, but the actual average energy use is going to be much less than that. It has six settings and I only need the lowest one, plus it's thermostatic so the heater will only be turning on when needed.

The higher wattage ones don't inevitably use more electric, they simply heat up faster.

Considering the electric pump for my gas heating alone consumes over 200w, the electric blanket that keeps me much warmer overnight than the heating is a far more efficient way to use electric.

My Carbon Club rank is now 16/28, so there are a few more people adding in their scores. Good luck to everyone that's in the i-measure competition/free draw. If I've got my figures right, there could be a good chance of the £250 being won by an MSE'er.

Electric blankets are going to be the way for this household to go this year as there's no way I can afford to heat this drafty old place when it took 80+ units per day last year and we could still see our breath in the hallway. I still haven't a clue how to heat the rest of the house, though! It's getting so cold already that at this rate, we'll never last until 1st November without switching a heater on! And on a less than frugal note, I'm going to have to switch on the tumble dryer tonight as nothing is drying. I'm thinking of placing a 'wanted' ad on freecycle for one of those old fashioned wooden 'clothes horses'.

If it's any help, the rankings change every time someone from the carbon group feeds in their readings. I'm now at 16/22 but haven't a clue what that figure is based on or what it reflects and if it is to show how well you have saved, then people who were already doing the challenge before joining i-measure will already have cut their useage. :D That could mean the lower numbers (the top 10) were fuel guzzlers at the start, whereas we are already like little Smart cars. :rotfl:

PS: Sorry, Mama67, that would make you the Rolls Royce  :o

Don't know about that Nyk, as my weekly payment figure has only gone up in line with the normal rises over the last 5-6 years, hasn't dropped significantly as we already were using all eco-bulbs not leaving things on standby, using timers etc.

Anyway have just popped onto www.i-measure.org.uk and below is my results page

    Your Results in Detail

You have been taking readings for 2 weeks
Since you started measuring your total household -
Energy use is 256 kWh (Gas: 0kWh | Electricity: 256kWh)
    Carbon emissions are 134 Kg CO2 (Gas: 0 Kg CO2 | Electricity: 134 Kg CO2)
    Money Spent

How has my energy spend been calculated?
    Last week you spent:
    • £0.00 on gas
    • £16.20 on electricity
Total you have spent on energy since starting imeasure (2 weeks ago):
    • £0.00 on gas
    • £30.72 on electricity
    Carbon Emitted & Energy Used

The results in the tables for 'last month' and 'last quarter' are in terms of the weekly average. The tables give you information about your household (black numbers) in comparison to the average imeasure households you choose to be compared (red numbers).
You chose to compare your household with (Same number of occupants/All housetypes) - to change your comparison go into your user detail settings.
Your results are being compared with the averages of 27 households.

There are some very good offers for subsidised insulation available from energy companies right now. It makes a big difference, even in old houses that have lots of air leaks.
  • Big thank you to you, SMF2. :T

If it wasn't for this thread I wouldn't have got my posterior in gear and kept an eye on our own usage. As a result of this I'm now trying to limit my usage so that our increase (to the capped rate) doesn't impact as dramatically as it could.

Already, well after 5 weeks monitoring, according to the Eon energy tracker (and I've put in my actual readings) we've used significantly less gas & electric than for last July and, tbh, I only started really keeping an eye on things since late July......am looking forward to beating the usage for August too............how dare these energy companies get in the way of my MFW dreams!

I would tell you how much less I've used but their "Your Account" bit of their website has gone down! Either way it was noticeably below last years plottings.

    LM :)

nearly relented and used the tumble today as the clothes, despite being out all day, were almost as wet as when they came out the machine.....instead the airer is out in the conservatory in the hope that the much promised morning sun tomorrow will do the job!........wanders off mumbling "I will not use my tumble dryer.....or put my heating on......".......:rotfl:

    Your Results in Detail

You have been taking readings for 4 weeks

Since you started measuring your total household -
Energy use is 192 kWh (Gas: 89kWh | Electricity: 103kWh)
    Carbon emissions are 72 Kg CO2 (Gas: 18 Kg CO2 | Electricity: 54 Kg CO2)
    Money Spent

How has my energy spend been calculated?
    Last week you spent:
    • £1.16 on gas
    • £3.24 on electricity
Total you have spent on energy since starting imeasure (4 weeks ago):
    • £3.10 on gas
    • £12.36 on electricity
    MoneySaving Carbon Club 26/28

    Energy Rating: D

Thats more gas than I thought I'd used.

I'll hopefully have a drop in electricity use this week.

Very low but still amazing how much carbon that is imagine if you had to put all that 'soot' in the wheelie bin:eek:.

    Right no more GAS!!
