I can't find any way of really comparing, as few offer the prepayment meters, which are normally classed as compulsory as part of the rental agreements about here. I guess it's to prevent tenants disappearing owing money to utilities companies. Apart from that, we appear to have one of the only 3 tier rating systems available. The storage heaters are on a seperate circuit, so cost only 5.18p per unit to run even when they kick in during daytime hours, which they do, unlike the old E7 system where they were relying on nightime heating only. With no gas mains and no option to install a central heating system, we probably are on the cheapest option available. Got new frugal neighbours moving in so I'll be able to compare notes with them. Other (not very frugal) neighbours are already spending between £40 and £50 per week on electricity.
I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

  • 5.18p sounds hard to beat at least for the storage heaters. If thats the largest part of your consumption I might be reluctant to change it.
  • ...and the meter reader appeared as if by magic...

AFFL - I tend to agree, I'm scared to make any changes in case it upsets the apple cart. To date, I've used a total of 9714 units since moving into the house and only 3635 of these have been daytime units, so almost 63% of useage is at night rates. If I had to pay 13p per unit at all times, umm...:eek::eek:

but I don't think it's very fair of Scottish Power NOT to reflect and reductions on our prices because we are on a prepayment meter. What's everyone else paying per kWh daytime at the moment? I'm still on 12.88p
My fixed price contract with SP (at 8.836p/kWh incl vat, 8.415p/kWh before vat) came to an end on 31st Aug.

I'm now on their Online Energy Saver 6, which is 3% below the standard rate. Standard rate is currently 9.482p/kWh incl vat (9.030p/kWh before vat), so mine works out at 9.197p/kwh incl vat (8.759p before vat)

I'm on a no-standing charge tariff, so actually pay higher for the first 225kWh per quarter. This calculates to be the equivalent of 12.62p/day incl vat, against a daily charge of 13.01p/day incl vat on the standard prices. (On my old tariff the standing charge was 24.52p/day - though I paid that through higher unit prices too. I don't gain anything on the electricity for being on NSC, but I do for the gas....... I haven't used the full number of higher priced units for the last 15 weeks, nor did I for the first 5 weeks of being on NSC which I switched to on 23/9/08 making for a total of 20 weeks in 49 :T )

ETA: Tariffs actually vary considerably depending on what region you live in.

    * Edit again * for my current package the tariff varies between 11.502p/kWh if your meter prefix is an 18 (Scottish Power area) and 8.179p/kWh/kWh incl vat if your meter prefix is a 23 (Yorkshire).

We capped our electricity and gas tarrif in April 2005 until April 2010. BG have calculated that we will have saved £923 plus £15 dual fuel discount and £68 DD discount. A grand total of £1006 :T:T:T.

But what will we do next April:confused: Think we are in for a shock:eek:

    Gas
Still not using the CH. Don't remember the last time it was on:D. Water comes on twice a day. That's all the gas we use.

    Electricity.
The kids are finally back at school after nearly 2 months off:eek: so we should to see a massive reduction in electricty usage. I am still line drying and finishing the clothes off in TD. We are still living without a freezer. Still using my DW but now that the kids are back at school should be able to reduce the use of this...That's about it I think!

    Best Wishes

  • Well, you all have inspired me to monitor my usage. I think I'll start a diary as well. Thanks!!
  • 16 kWh of electricity this week and all B's. Somehow have appeared second on the top five list but not all people listed so far. Hoping to get to October without putting the heating on - this will feel extravagant but I'm sure the first chill will convince me it's not.
