Heating and hot water are controlled by a thermostat and timer, hope this help?
Does anyone know why electricity costs more than gas? i know gas has less human involvement but is that really it?0 -
No Idea why electricity costs more, higher costs of extraction, processing, distribution, and loss of energy in converting from one energy form to another I would imagine are key reasons. I don't know enough about it to comment on the human involvment.
There's three ways I think you can reduce energy costs: reduce consumption, switch supplier and improve energy effiency.
Donning a jumper and reducing the temperature slightly reduces costs quite quickly. 18 to 21 celcius is the recommended temperature for the living room. Turning the heating off an hour or half an hour before bed too.
Switching baths for showers helps a lot too as does shortening showers and lowering the temperature.
I'd recommend keeping a daily diary of your consumption too. Check the meters at a certain time each day - evening might be best. Maybe a note of what appliances you are using.
Have you been on imeasure?
www.imeasure.org.uk
this is really good for keeping track of your weekly usage and gives a graph and efficiency rating too.0 -
Electricity costs more than gas because the energy source (coal, gas, biomass, nuclear reaction, wind, water, biomass etc) needs to be processed to turn it into electricity. Where electricity is manufactured using a combustible fuel, only a proportion of the fuel is turned into electricity - some energy is lost in heat. In addition, electricity cannot be stored effectively, and a small proportion is lost in transmission/conversion as well. Then there is the management of the power station, including the varying of generation to match the load on the grid. And of course the maintenance of the power generation and transmission infrastructure.
oh yes... and the cost of the fuel - so electricity made from gas costs as much as the gas PLUS the cost of generation...0 -
Don't know how I kept it so low this week I only used 19 kwh of electricity and 4 units of gas. Currently on a B :j - 35 / 48
Energy use is 3,528 kWh (Gas: 2,548kWh | Electricity: 980kWh)
Carbon emissions are 1,037 Kg CO2 (Gas: 525 Kg CO2 | Electricity: 513 Kg CO2)
Last week you spent:
* £1.54 on gas
* £2.28 on electricity
Total - 33 weeks:
* £89.18 on gas
* £117.60 on electricity
All users/All housetypes
Your results are being compared with the averages of 261 households.

Here I am, raising the national average again
I did manage to maintain my 'D' rating and am currently 15/48 in the carbon club. We used 273 units last week at an overall cost of £22.10, so an average cost of 8.1p per kWh this week. I really need to try using more power through the night and less through the day but it's practically impossible.I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

Last week you spent:
£1.16 on gas - 33kwh
£2.40 on electricity - 20kwh
A carbon rating, 2/48 in the carbon club.
Total you have spent on energy since starting imeasure (17 weeks ago):
£38.00 on gas
£43.68 on electricity0 -
Hi, I've been following your thread for a while and so I hope its ok as I decided to join up using i-measure. Have just entered my first weeks result.You have been taking readings for 1 week
Since you started measuring your total household -
Energy use is 33 kWh (Gas: 0kWh | Electricity: 33kWh)
Carbon emissions are 17 Kg CO2 (Gas: 0 Kg CO2 | Electricity: 17 Kg CO2)
Last week you spent:- £3.96 on electricity
- £3.96 on electricity
I took the gas reading out as I dont have it here.
I hope to cut that this weeks (especially if weather stays nice) but its been great reading everyones tips and advice.0 -
Welcome aboard
Nyk will be especially pleased to see you, as she's been the only 'electricity only' house up until now as far as we could tellCheryl0 -
