I've calculated my energy cost per unit for electricity = 0.06p
And gas per unit is = 0.038

    Does this make sense??

including vat at 5% my electricity is 8.836p/KwH, and gas is 2.91p/KwH

my gas meter is cubic metres, and each 1 unit equates to about 12KwH (so a unit on the meter is about a quarter of a penny)

How do you work out kwh's??

    Sorry just read it propperly.

    So with gas its 12kwh = 1unit
What is the equasion for electricity xkwh = u units?
  • Electricity is calculated by multiplying the number of kWh by the cost. Add the standing charge if there is one. To get the total including VAT multiply by 0.05.

Six pence sounds is low for 1 kWh of electricity. Do you have a tiered tariff.? A tiered tariff is one that you pay more for the first so many kWh and then a reduced rate.

only if your meter measures in cubic metres -- if it's cubic feet the calculation is different

the units on the electricity meter are kWh

Another thought on energy hungry appliances -- an oven works out as an expensive cooking method if you're only cooking one or two small bits. I normally only cook for 2, so wherever possible I use my combination microwave rather than the cooker oven ;)

My working outs where completely wrong.

Before i continue please dont hate me for having perhaps unreasonably high usages, i have seen the error of my ways and this bill reflects my past.

my gas is 30 (100s cubic feet) = 941 kwh
    first 136 at 6.080p = £8.27
    second at 1.990p = 16.02
total = £24.29 (not including VAT)

    Electricity is 380 kWh
    first 182 at 12.060p = 21.95
    second at 11.510p = 22.79
total = £44.74 (Not including VAT)

just need to work out how much on average a day costs, and if i am using alot of energy or not. (i predict that i am_)

how long does that cover? from your first post I assume it's just 2 of you in the property? how big a property is it?

your gas is around what I've used in the past 4 weeks (983kWh gas) - that's a 4 bed detached house, with me and younger son full-time, plus grand-daughters around school for 3 weeks of that. and my elder son home for a week.

My electricity for that period was 240kWh

I've been working on reducing my usage for a good 12 months now, but especially since October/November. Best advice is to look around for obvious culprits (like boiling a full kettle for one drink), and then take baby steps with the rest :)

Sorry, my bills are monthly, so the amount qouted is for 4 weeks. and yes just me and my gf in the house.
  • Hi jw,

My parents, for a two bedroom house, are paying around £20 a week plus a bag of coal every week in winter.

How is your heating and hot water controlled?
