I always eat salads abroad but I too am in the caste iron stomach club, I brush my teeth with the local tap water but always drink bottled water (even in the UK as I think tap water tastes )

Like others have said if you have a delicate tummy then maybe not but 99% of the time upset stomachs I have had have been down to drinking too much alcohol

    Hi

best advice re avoiding upset stomach in Sharm is to have a supply of hand cleansers.

Most upsets are caused by the dirty money out there not the food or even the water.

OH and self had 10 glorious days in Sharm in January ate and drank with ice in alll drinks happily but cleaned our hands regularly using those hand sanitisers. The money is filthy.

hope you have a wonderfull time

  • If you've got the usual food poisoning, the best thing to drink to stop you getting dehydrated is coke that you've allowed to go flat. Just take small sips - this was recommended to me from a sister in a childrens hospital ward when my son was ill one time and it works brilliantly for kids and adults.

So if you're abroad and ill and you've got nothing else - just get some coke, very simple and easy. The sugar helps give you energy too. :j
  • Hiya,
Last year my boyfriend and I stayed at the Reef Oasis Blue Bay at Sharm and it was FANTASTIC! It was recommended to me by a friend who works for Thomson and we couldn't have wished for a better holiday.
The salads are perfectly fine to eat as is the fruit. Thomson's insist that the resorts they promote only use bottled water for the ice and washing of salads etc.

If you do unfortunately suffer from Mummy Tummy, go to the pharmacist on the complex and he'll give you some tablets that will sort you out within 24 hrs. I didn't suffer but my boyfriend did and the tablets worked a treat!

I'm really jealous that you're going to the Reef Oasis. I hope you have a wonderful time and say hi to Chico behind the bar!!

When in the Middle east do as the locals do and eat natural yoghourt. All the hotels serve it for breakfast and it's made freshly every day. I always eat yoghourt for breakfast at least two weeks before I go abroad and carry on eating it when I'm there. Natural yoghourt contains probiotics which increase the flora in your stomach - there's no need to buy special tablets or probiotic drinks. I've never had any problems. Also, although I eat meat in this country I never eat it abroad and I agree 100% regarding money handling - so much bacteria gets passed on this way - who knows where the money's been kept:eek:

SO - did you eat salad and drink tap water???

I never drink the tap water (I try to stick to filtered in the UK!).

    Got back Sunday night.

Ate salads at my hotel, no problem.

Went to Cairo for the day, had lunch on the Nile. Didn't eat any salads or meat, just veg, pots, pasta, bread & cake (was worried because it was a regular place not my 5* hotel & the Nile is grotty itself).
Ate no dinner that evening, too late back & too tired.
Had usual breakfast the next morning.

24 Hours after Lunch in Cairo I had the "trotts" BAD:mad:
Had to get tablets (two types from the chemist & some sachets), had to return for stronger stuff. Spend that day in bed & most of the following day.

Looked like yellow stained water, never had the trotts that bad, Sorry if thats TMI.

we went to egypt on our hunnymoon and when we were being transfered from the airport to hotel they put a very strict warning out to not clean your teeth with tap water as it is dangerous to our stomachs. i forgot and di and got very ill. and i dont drink at all but i was so ill. i naturally avoid anything like thatjust in case but i dont have a strong stomach.
back to comping in 2017, fingers crossed

Stayed in a 5* hotel last year near Hurghada. Cleaned my teeth in local water and ate the salads and drank the local wine, but drank bottled water. I generally have a cast iron stomach. Wasn't a big drinking holiday due to the high cost of alchohol. My hubby nearly always gets ill on holiday with stomach bugs and he didn't suffer at all. My little girl was also fine and ate the salads all the time. But I did get gastronenteritis a couple of days before we went home and was put on a drip. It was pretty unpleasant for one night, then I was fine. Doctor said I shouldn't have taken the Imodium I took with me as it was wrong for this type of infection. Absolutely fine 24 hrs later. Who is to know waht caused it? Hotel was immaculately clean. Certainly wouldn't put me off going again, but interesting about the money - hadn't even thought about that! It is filthy.

Did you eat outside of the hotel?

I don't buy the filthy money story, not sure I believe that germs can survive in the air on paper & be able to give you the trots, why would their money be any dirtier than ours anyway?

You must have been bad to need a drip, poor you.

Mrs E - I was about to reply to this last week but you'd already gone away so there wasn't much point. All I wanted to tell you about was ENTOCID, this clears your mummy tummy up instantly :D We stayed at St Joseph Hotel in Luxor a few years ago, a little chemist round the corner from there sold us some ENTOCID for just 30p. When you've got the mummy tummy you daren't cough or even think of going to the toilet, just run! We knew whenever someone had it (most people did) as they would try and smile as they rushed (whilst pretending not to) through the dining area ;)

I didn't drink the tap water but we were told that it was ok to brush our teeth with it. One bloke we met said that he's been going there for 5 years and had always drank the water.

The stomach upsets could be down to a number of things, such as flying, different food, air con in your face - so I've heard
