I'm off on the 30/06 to sonesta in luxor and from what I can gather the tap water is fine just chlorinated which probably doesn't taste very nice to us.A trick i picked up a few years ago and seems to work is to eat a local live yoghurt as soon as you can after landing. Then you have a few beneficial egyptian bacteria in your gut to protect you from the nasties.By the way I intend to eat anything offered.Anyone for a crumbed sheep's brain sandwich?

    ....
I think what one should and shouldn't eat depends on the person and their ability to handle variations in their diet and potential bugs.

I am in the cast iron constitution camp and will happily eat local food in places that the average Westerner fears to tread, because that is where the good food is and I know it is fresh produce freshly cooked and to be honest, some of the best dishes I've tried have ended with a stray cat getting the leftovers and licking the plate clean. ;)

I wonder how many folk blame salad and water when the REAL culprit is the buffet? ..... In my opinion, the buffet is a stomachs worst enemy, far worse than Ice or salad. ;)

I travelled around Egypt some years a go when it was just becoming fashionable to do the "Nile Cruises" where meal times are like attending a wedding buffet. Delicious food piled high.

After a hot day in the sun, with probably not too much fluids a good dinner, cooked in oil and spices you are not accustomed too, followed by a substantial helping something likely to be a fruit somethingorother topped with creamy substances, followed by beer/wine/spirits is likely to churn about in your tum somewhat, and you get to do it all the following day!

You are so likely to try different things, you are on holiday after all.

I am a veggie so do not shy away from salads. Always use the tap water to clean my teeth but buy bottled water to drink, only because of the metallic taste and always take de-hydration powders with me. If you do get an upset tummy you have to drink copious amounts of fluids, not just the glass here and there.

What I am trying to say, in a roundabout way is don't overdo it with food, drink plenty of fluids (minimum alcohol)and don't fry in the sun.

    ENJOY!

Chlorinated just like the water that comes out of your tap in the UK then...

personally, I would avoid drinking tap water, and would be a little cautious eating salad in restaurants unless I could see how it was prepared, and whether the staff wore gloves (as per Hilton Coral Neweiba) given the lower hygiene regime in certain countries.

I drink pleny of water in the UK, when in a hot country I drinks LOADS!!!

I would drink no more than 1 glass of wine per day (& thats pushing the boat out because of being on holiday!).

I do come out of the sun at midday & go & have some lunch in the shade.

But the practice nurse said to me, that she personally wouldn't eat salads in Egypt.
