to Russetred, I would not advise drinking the hotel tap water chlorinated or not. we were advised by our rep not to (not that I would anyway) and have the usual bottled water. Be sure the water bottle is sealed as locals will bottle up Nile water to try to sell to the tourists. PS they also have fake fags which are to quote our tour guide 'camel !!!!!!'!Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0

Hi please do not drink the tap water in Egypt as you will be very ill. The water is sourced from the wells in the desert and treated at the desalination plants. The water is highly chlorinated and is only safe to drink if you are used to it.0

I'm off to Sharm on Sunday.
Normally (when abroad) I don't touch the tap water & stick to ice cubes made from bottled water.
BUT I do eat the salads.....
Should I be extra careful in Sharm?
Do or would you eat salads in Egypt?
I'm staying at the Reef Oasis Blue Bay which is 5* from the Thomsons Premier brochure. Would you eat the salads at a 5*?
SO - did you eat salad and drink tap water???:j0 -
If you stick to drinking the bottled water, just be aware that it has a higher mineral content than most.0

I personally don't eat salads abroad,i want to eat something that's looked over a fence, not grown at the side of one.:D0

I've been to Egypt on a less than 5* trip and had no problem with the food anywhere as far as I can recall.
Far more memorable was a trip to Thailand where my yummy, yummy favourite was the iced fresh lemonade with lots of scrummy little bits of lemon floating in it.
That is until the day I took a long swig of my cool drink only to get a bit of lemon pith stuck in the back of my throat. It was actually a toenail.0 -
Sharm?! Never again, the people there are just after your money and have no respect for you. If you don't buy anything they call you every name under the sun.
Watch your bags cameras, they will have them off you before you know it.
I know a Taxi driver who made of with a families luggage and push chair!
they got out, the driver took off with everything in the boot!
As for the water, depends on your own body. Nothing wrong with the water, just different minerals. I have never had a problem drinking water from anywhere abroad.
The better establishments wash salad leafs in bottles or filtered water.0 -
My OH has just returned after 7 weeks diving and had d&v twice so bad he had to have a drip and the dr administer injections into his bottie. He is a strong Army bloke who has vowed never to go again which is sad as we both love the diving.SORRY....Handgel is my top tip.

Absolutely right - the water makes people feel rough in Egypt because of the high chlorination levels, not because it's dirty - it's just different.
Be aware though, that unless you wash everything you eat off/drink out of, yourself, you will be ingesting local water anyway - plates, cutlery, glasses etc are all washed in the highly chlorinated water! So, it's basically unavoidable to get a little "under the weather" (to be polite).
I've been to Egypt a few times (am doing my PhD in Egyptology), and drink bottled water because of the better taste, but otherwise don't worry too much. Local Egyptian herbal tea - can't remember the exact name, but based on star anise/liquorice/similar, and tastes like liquorice - is BRILLIANT for an unsettled stomach - most EGyptian cafes and restaurants will make you some if you explain the problem! Swear by it... In fact, you can get it in this country in health food shops - it's "Yogi" brand - this one:

- could take some with you?
Have a great trip!

Before you go - I would recommend taking probiotics (easily available from your local Pharmacist, who will be able to advise you) for about a week. I find they work wonders and I can usually eat anything, especially salad whilst in Egypt or wherever.0
