Well done FMN! And good for you taking such a positive view of it. I'm sure you'll get a job really soon - that one obviously wasn't quite right.

Hi Paige, not to worry. Some involved in the recruitment process had misgivings about the length of time that I hadn't worked, but not the individual I would have been working for directly. He was confident I could do the job but was overruled. I do genuinely feel that I'd be better in this type of postition than I would have been if there had been no gap. I'm older, wiser and have faced and overcome more difficulties than I could have dreamt of back then. I just need to convince another prospective employer of this! Regarding the debts, we are spending next to nothing - another £40 weekly shop on Saturday for the 6 of us, and we're not starving! Freezer and cupboards are being depleted but that feels healthy - I've defrosted my freezer now and can see what's in there! Kids are getting used to not hacing sweets etc after school, and it's fine. They haven't noticed their swimming lessons have stopped. No nasty letters or calls yet, and we're managing to pay our priority debts. Calm before the storm maybe - alarm bells will start ringing I suppose as the letters arrive offering token payments, but it all feels ok for the moment. Still working at shaving more off our outgoings - need to get new insurance quotes but because of the internet being down I haven't been able to the last couple of days. How is all with you?

Aww, thanks Babyharry! What a nice thing to say... Well, I'm feeling positive, which amazes me all things considered. Still got some fight in me, which I think I'm going to need over the next few months. I've just been reading the Debt Free Roll of Honour to give me motivation! Thanks for posting.

The main difference between our spending now and two weeks ago, is that there's no waste. I don't buy things which languish in the back of the fridge and I have to throw away (that shames me). Everything gets used, and I don't buy things which we don't "need". Once the biscuits are gone, there are no more till the next week. Same goes for cereal - if the children have 3 bowls in a day of their fave and the box is empty, they know there'll be a few days before it's replaced and if they're hungry they can have fruit, toast or yoghurt. I don't think that's a bad lesson is it?!

    Sorry about the job FMN,

Strange how the guy you would have worked for was overruled by the management who would not be working with you. Oh wise managers-not! Keep going because that interview can only give you confidence and you can build on the lessons learned to achieve your goal.

Ditto for our family re: freezer etc. My kids are not even questioning why the cupboards aren't bulging like they used to. You are right- it is shameful how we wasted food before.

We had a lovely large family barbeque the other day and everyone brought food and drink. It was lovely and didn't cost a penny. It also helped to fill the fridge with leftovers! Try it and you'll wonder why you never did it that way before.

It is amazing what you can achieve with very limited funds. I have learnt a huge lesson.

    Hi FGMN
Well done on being so positive. Like other comments no-one in my house seems to have noticed that I have reduced our monthly food and drinks bill from about £800 per month to £400 and still going !! I have started saying to my girls exactly whay you have said "when its gone, its gone and no more until my next shopping trip" Before I would be at Sainsburys replacing every little thing. ( I am not starving everyone although it sounds like it)
We have reduced our debt from £25 K to £8k in the past year, but now its creeping back up again - now at £15 K. I am really upset about this as it is not due to overspending but due to some clients not paying some money they owe us. When this is payed we will be back in a better position. I am praying it is a "when" and not an "if".
My husband and I both are self employed, him as a management consultant and I keep accounts for small businesses.
I tend to read everyones journeys but I do not post very much - just to offer encouragement and good wishes. I feel very embarassed to post because although I work in accounts, and we are large wage earners we have still managed to run our credit cards up.
I think if I put up our SOA everyone would wonder how we got in such a mess, I know I do !!!
Well done , FGMN, you are such an inspiration.
