robpw2 - I'm going to work on all those ideas, thank you. I feel so strapped for time at the moment - not sure whether I should put all my energy into finding a job, reducing our outgoings, appeasing our creditors, or phoning estate agents for a house valuation and looking for a new one. Husband of course has to be at work so he can't help me too much.

yes i understand its not easy and time can be tough especially when you have children. I would suggest writing to all your creditors using a standard letter explaining the situation and offer them a nominal amount of £1.00 till you get yourself sorted. make sure you t ell them what date
you will make your first payment and say that if they have not written to you before this date you assume they will be accepting your offer.

looking for a job is very stressful and i hope you find one soon

  • I'm so demoralised. I just spoke to a recruitment consultant who was probably half my age about a job I could do standing on my head, and she said, "well this is the only position that we have suitable for you, and even then I think they'll look at your CV and think you haven't had the recent sales experience" (not worked for 14 years). My response? Selling is selling isn't it? and I was dealing with much higher profile clients before... And my computer experience is completely up to date.... Grrr...I NEED a job..... I didn't say any of that to her in those terms anyway of course....

FMN - what Rob is suggesting is the start of a debt management Plan (DMP). The free debt charities we mentioned can help you with doing this but your credit rating will be shot for quite a while. If you feel a DMP is the way to go, then this is usually the first step.

I'd also post your CV on monster.com and similar sites. Hopefully you'll get a better response from there.

Before doing anything i suggest you talk to one of the free debt charities with regards structuring a repayment plan and how to go about it. Some people are doing a DMP themselves if the charities feel they do not have enough income to enable them to assist. It's worth getting advice before attempting it though.

  • Thank you GeorgeUK - I was trying to remember the name of that site!

I spoke to CCCS and did their forms online, but their response was there was nothing they could do until our income increased and our outgoings decreased, as even without our debts we were overspending by £600+ a month... so that's what we need to tackle before they can talk to us about options. No one has called or emailed today in response to all my CVs and applications snet out yesterday, but fingers crossed...

    Hi forgetmenot.

Don't be discouraged by that young whippersnapper. You sound like a most resourceful person and I'm sure you will be snapped up by the right employer.

I've been blown away by the change in your tone since you first started posting - was it really just three days ago? - you have made huge progress already and while there are bound to be setbacks along the way, I for one have every confidence that you will soon be making big inroads into those debts.

yes you will find a job
i assume as you have kids that you have plenty of experience to be a childminder
you could apply to be one of those or a nanny

I think you may need to take any job at this moment in time, maybe take alook at your councils website and look for a midday assistant job or work in the school office, something, anything, it is always easier to get a job when in a job if you know what I mean.

I too have been out of the workplace for years, I don't know the current lingo, "out of the box" "drilling down" or "blue sky thinking".

I'm too hoping to return to some kind of paid employment this year and I'm just going to apply for anything initially to get on the employment ladder.

(I hope my post doesn't offend you, its certainly not intended to do so).

Well done FMN! Sounds like you've done so well already! As you say, money saving certainly can be addictive!

Don't lose heart when little obstacles come your way (in the shape of jumped up recruitment people!), just keep plugging away and remember the positive frame of mind you can be in and you'll get there!

Well done, I'm really pleased things are still moving on! QBx
