I was just wondering if there is any way I could over ride my current computer setting to enable me to watch BBc iplayer, ITV-catchup or CH4 online from abroad. How is it possible to hide the fact that I am abroad when I access these sites. Is there any way of circumventing/disguising ths fact that I am abroad. Thanks all ideas welcome.

It won't be long before someone comes along and says you should not be discussing illegal activities on MSE. Before they do, the only way is to rent some probably expensive server resources in the UK that will act as a high bandwidth proxy server. Only for the rich then. If you work for a big co and have excellent broadband at the receiving end then a VPN back to the UK network might also work.

A more practical possibility is to attach a Slingbox to a your Sky box or PVR at home in the UK. With it you can set the recordings and play back on demand as well as watch live (all in slightly dubious quality depending on the upload/download connection speeds abvailable). There are reviews aplenty if this or see http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/07/07/skype_tv_adaptor/ - my is this gadget already 2 years old?

A ten quid a month VPS would do the trick. Or If the OP has broadband with Be* or O2, it'd have the upload speed necessary to do what you're saying.

But if the OP has a PC setup in the UK, but wants to watch corrie while away on business or whatever, they should get themselves a DVB-T/-C or -S card, and set the PC up to record and encode the shows for them, then once they're encoded (and a sensible size for transferring) they can transfer them from their home PC to wherever they are right now. That way they'll get a much wider selection of channels than with these catch-up services, and the quality will be a lot better than with iPlayer or a slingbox or whatever.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

Thanks Everyone. It seems very complicted to achieve. I thought it would be a simple case of re-adjusting my PC settings. More fool me. Thanks for all the contributions.

Here you go, use http://proxify.co.uk/ enter the web address you want and untick, remove all scripts. That'll probably work, unless they've blocked these proxies.

More UK web proxies here: http://www.freewebproxylist.com/UK_WebProxies.html

The free version of Proxify does not allow access to mpg, mov, mp3, avi, aiff, zip...
Any any attempt to transfer data at rates needed for TV I think will end in tears...
I believe the BBC has a positive identification register: It allows all well-known UK internet providers to access the iPlayer. If a lesser-known one is blocked by default it can apply to the BBC to be vetted and added to the Whitelist. So the likes of DodgyProxy.co.uk may not have much of a chance unless they pipe anonymously thru a major UK ISP.
  • I've never tried it but Slingbox I supposed to let you watch TV from anywhere: http://uk.slingmedia.com There's no version of their software for Linux though.

  • I live near Benidorm and have no success accessing iplayer here using proxies. Having said that I am somewhat a newbie so may well be doing something wrong.
I gather there is also a work around involving scripting?

I would be more than happy to give any fixes a try but please explain the setup fully.

I am unaware of the constraints on the BBC to operate this policy, but I wonder why it does not apply to BBC radio?
There are a lot of people around the world that would happily pay the licence fee. Then too we would not need our 2.4 metre (yes almost 8 feet!) satellite dishes to get the BBC TV

  • Hi,
if you go to www.britishcornershop.co.uk they provide UK tv around the world, not sure how much it costs but they were offering a free 7 day trial.
