Why is my PC so damn slow???

Thanks so much - you've found these websites selling compatible ram but I checked on here too late
There's a seemingly very helpful powerseller on ebay who I emailed the crucial link to last night. This morning I had a reply - he checked for me and says his ram is compatible so I decided to give it a go as he refunds on incompatibility. I went ahead and ordered before logging into mse. Shame, as for the sake of a few more pounds I probably would have chosen to go with a more reputable firm. Ah well, done it now. It should be here by tomorrow, so I'll soon find out whether I need to use one of the firms you mention!
Re the list of ten things, I've been through it. Have tried most of the things mentioned over the past few weeks in my quest to speed things up, but not looked at the bios settings. When I hear bios mentioned I tend to panic! Will give it a go.
Also looked at the windows services, the indexing one isn't on. Have stopped everything unnecessary in msconfig. Defragged, scanned. Don't think anything is failing, no blue screens etc. Just slow. Feel sure it must be the lack of ram.0 -
Let us know how you get on when you've fitted your new memory stick.

Well, my ram arrived today - Kingston as it turned out, and it's worked!:j
My pc isn't quite as fast as I'd hoped it would be but it has certainly improved dramatically.
Am now considering doing the repair install in addition, although I'm curious - if it doesn't get rid of any files, what exactly does it do? It seems quite involved so not sure if it will make a difference significant enough to be worth the hassle.
By the way, thanks TOG and also everyone who has given me advice here - it is greatly appreciated. Don't know what I did before MSE?!?!0 -
if it doesn't get rid of any files, what exactly does it do?
In simple terms it re-installs the Windows files that make the operating system work.
So if formatting the disk were the equivalent of getting rid of your car and replacing it with a new one, the repair install is analogous to replacing the engine in your car but leaving the rest the same, including your possesions in the boot (data files).
