bascially if you buy a 512mb ram which is not compatible with your computer

    then it wont work
its just be a dead memory chip in your computer
  • I've got another pc that died, used to belong to my mum. It's got 512mb ram going spare - the spec being the same apart from instead of pc133 it's pc100.

I take it that it wouldn't be compatible with my machine but just thought I'd ask before I bother to buy any.

Whilst looking on ebay at the PC133 ones, one of the items mentioned that it was "PC133 compliant (backward with PC100)" whatever that means?!?

Nomrally pc133 will work a pc100 hence backward comptable. My last server 800mhz Duron had 1x256 pc100 and 1x256 pc133 and ran perfectly okay for several years
  • Doh, now I've opened up the machine and looked at it, it's only got 64mb!! Could've sworn her pc had a better spec than that.

Oh well, back to the drawing board, nice idea.

Can I gatecrash - this thread is really helpful!

I have been on crucial to see about upgrading my Evesham voyager 5000

Heres what it recommended :CRUCIAL RECOMMENDS

Then I looked on Ebay and found these: EBAY ITEMS

Could one of you techies take a look and see if you can tell which one if any I should buy?

Thanks so much in advance, Jen ;)
  • Sorry, read it was 5 years old so should of been running 2000 or millenium, as you bought it new with XP installed all you can do is increase the RAM.
The other you can try is to find out what programs are running in the background, this could well slow your pc down. to do this go start, run, type in msconfig and then go to last tab for start up, check to see whats running at start up, a lot of it is not needed to run all the time - Hope this helps

    Hi,

From the crucial website it says your 5000 HPA has a maximum capacity of 160mb ram

How much ram do you already have?

Okay - I'm not sure what info you need so here's what I found:

    Total physical memory 97,776 KB
    Available physical memory 5,512 KB
    Total virtual memory 327,276 KB
    Available Virtual memory 124,336 KB

Does this make any sense?? Thanks, Jen
  • BEWARE

mis matching memory while in some cases will work, it often leads to instability and occasionally will plainly cause your PC to not work at all.

Not all systems on a 100FSB (PC100 Ram) will accept PC133. I know this for a fact since I tried several eMachines PCs with PC133 and all refused to boot.

You can risk it if you like, but for a pound or two I wouldnt bother. Some moneysaving isn't worth the hassle.

    Tom thumb;

You have 96mb of ram in your pc, you must have a 64mb stick and a 32mb ram stick. Assuming you only have 2 slots for memory, 1 will have to go.

As your machine only takes 160mb, (1 x 128mb and 1x32mb), to maximise the memory available you need to change the 64mb ram stick for a 128mb ram stick.
